RECYCLING DROP-OFF CENTER GROUNDBREAKING

Please make plans to join us for the official Groundbreaking of the new West Mobile Recycling Drop-Off Center located on the Southeast corner of the former Brewer Center property off Hitt Road on Friday, November 22 at 10 a.m. The Recycling Center project is made possible through a Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) federal grant. CIAP grants are disbursed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service and are used for federally approved projects that provide conservation, protection, or restoration in coastal areas of the United States. The West Mobile Recycling Drop-Off Center project is expected to be completed within nine months and become operational by mid-year 2014. Recyclables accepted will include plastic beverage containers, aluminum beverage cans, steel/tin cans, glass, cardboard, paper, and electronic items. Goodwill Easter Seals of Southwest Alabama will manage and operate the Center under contract with Mobile County once the construction is complete.

HOUSEHOLD WASTE PAINT COLLECTION DAY

On Saturday, November 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mobile County will sponsor a paint collection and disposal event at the Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds located at 1035 North Cody Road. The event is also made possible through a CIAP grant. According to Bill Melton, Mobile County Environmental Engineer, paints are the single largest hazardous material that come from households. The collection event is open to all Mobile County residents. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles and to follow traffic flow directions. May you and your family enjoy a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

FEMA FEMA HAZARD MITIGATION GRANTS

A FEMA Hazard Mitigation grant program will be administered by the Alabama Department of Insurance (ADOI). It is expected to supplement retrofit costs for approximately 120 homes in Baldwin and Mobile counties. Each resident receiving a grant will be eligible for 75% of the total wind retrofit project cost, up to $5,000. Some applicants may be eligible to receive discounts on their homeowner's insurance premiums as a result of this retrofit work. The ADOI began accepting complete applications for grants online on October 28. Applicants will be prioritized on a first come, first served basis.

Increased funding for home mitigation was a recommendation of Governor Robert Bentley's Affordable Homeowner Insurance Commission in its February 2013 report. This grant program will begin that process. A total of $635,920 will be available to the two counties for the grants; $432,184 for Baldwin County and $203,736 for Mobile County. These grants will be provided as a pilot program for what state officials hope

will be a much larger future program authorized by the Strengthen Alabama Homes Act which passed state legislature in 2011.

Some of the details of the program include:

  • Eligibility
    • Single-family, owner-occupied, primary residence, homesteaded
    • Must have wind and flood insurance policies. The flood policy is only required if the home is located in a designated Special Flood Hazard Area.
    • Home must be structurally sound.
  • Wind retrofit mitigation projects awarded will include, but not necessarily be limited to, roof sealing, roof deck replacement, and/or the installation of tested impact-resistant opening protection in compliance with the IBHS Fortified Standards.
  • Home inspections will be required to validate the work.

Residents interested in applying or learning more about guidelines and eligibility requirements should contact the Alabama Department of Insurance at 1-800-433-3966 or Click Here to visit the ADOI website. Applications may be submitted online.

 marineCOMMUNITY ASSESSMENT OF MARINE USE

If you live in Baldwin or Mobile counties and spend time on the water, commercially or recreationally, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) and the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) would like your input through an online survey, The Community Assessment of Marine Use. Representatives from Alabama State Port Authority, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ADCNR, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Gulf State Marine Fisheries Commission, Geological Survey of Alabama, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, MBNEP, U.S. Coast Guard, and Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve have joined together to improve communication between and cooperation among differing commercial and recreational interests that use marine resources. Responses received will help to improve coordination of the many ways our coastal waters are used.

The Community Assessment of Marine Use, available now through November 22, will evaluate how people use marine resources. Please provide your input by following the link below:
