CONNIE HUDSON

 

Many thanks to the members of the Mobile City Council for sponsoring a resolution at their April 16 City Council meeting to rename the city's Hillcrest Road senior center as the Connie Hudson Mobile Regional Senior Community Center. I am so deeply honored and appreciative to each member of the City Council and especially District 6 Councilwoman Bess Rich, who spearheaded the renaming initiative. Thank you!

April has been an exciting month of events for Mobile County and for Commission District 2. Thursday, April 11 was the grand opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting for the new Semmes Senior Center. The beautifully renovated facility will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Individual memberships are $40 annually for persons age 62 and older. The first volunteer orientation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 30.

Earlier this month, the Mobile County Commission launched a new interactive events web page. The site at VisitMobileCounty.com features events and attractions throughout Mobile County. Areas of interest categories include, Arts and Culture, Historic Sites, Sports, Water Activities, Outdoors, Events, Educational and Agri-Tourism. Visitors to our area can register to build itineraries and by clicking on the MyTrip button. Community groups can also submit events for inclusion through an on-line form. The plans and specifications for the proposed West Mobile Residential Recycling Center off Hitt Road are in the final design stage. Once the County Commission approves the bid documents (in May), a four-week advertising period will follow. The Mobile County Environmental Services Department will then accept construction bids, review the bids, and make a recommendation to the Mobile County Commission for awarding the contract. After construction commences, it is expected to take six to eight months for facility completion. The Center will be operated by Goodwill Easter Seals under management contract with Mobile County. Once operational, the center will accept plastic beverage containers (no lids or caps), aluminum beverage cans, steel/tin cans, glass, cardboard, paper and electronic items.


Goodwill Easter Seals, with a grant from Gulf Coast RC&D Council in partnership with Baker High School, Earth Resources, Keep Mobile Beautiful, Mobile County Extension, and Gulf Coast Containers will be accepting recyclables from 8:00 a.m. to noon the last Saturday of each month at Baker High School, 3901 Airport Blvd., Mobile. Community volunteers will hand out educational materials and unload goods from vehicles as part of a drive-thru service. Accepted goods are plastic 

beverage containers (no lids or caps), aluminum beverage cans, steel/tin cans, glass, cardboard, and paper.

"Cupcake" is a two-month old female Labrador mix that was brought into the shelter along with her mom and six siblings.  Her mother appeared to be a stray that was wandering the streets looking for a home for her pups. They are now housed at the Mobile County Animal Shelter where they are each looking for their forever families.  If you are interested in adopting
"Cupcake" or any of her brothers or sisters, please contact the Mobile County Animal Shelter at 574-3647. The adoption fee is $80 and that includes spay, rabies vaccination, first set of shots and a dewormer.

NATIONAL CRIME VICTIMS' RIGHTS WEEK

National Crime Victims' Rights Week is observed in April to promote victims' rights and honor crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf. The Mobile County District Attorney's Office has planned several events to bring awareness to this national campaign and looks forward to observing National Crime Victims' Rights Week with you.

BATTLE OF THE BAY CANOE AND KAYAK RACE

Battle of the Bay is the second annual canoe and kayak race that will benefit the South Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program. It is a three-mile paddle in Mobile Bay along with a shrimp and grits brunch at the Bluegill. The South Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program (SAVLP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free legal assistance in certain civil matters to low income residents of Mobile, Baldwin, Washington and Clarke counties.

"MAKE THE MOVE TO A RICHER LIFE" 5K CAMPAIGN WALK

April is Fair Housing Month and as a way to promote fair and equal treatment in housing, the Center for Fair Housing is hosting a community walk where local businesses and social service organizations will display information about the services they provide. This walk is open to the public.

 

Cost: $10, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Sybil H. Smith Family Village Transitional Housing Program, which provides housing for homeless women and their children in Mobile.

Explore seven local private gardens and discover new ideas for your own at this year's Gallery of Gardens tour. Experience garden diversity as you tour homes in Spring Hill, Old Dauphinway, and Midtown Mobile. This year, the entire street of Flo-Claire is joining in the spirit and sprucing up their front yards for the tour. Master Gardeners will be at each location to give visitors descriptions of the gardens and highlight ideas they can use at home.  

 

Cost: Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of. Tickets may be purchased at the Mobile Botanical Gardens office or MarketPlace, or at any of the participating ticket outlets. Group rates are available to groups of ten or more.

 MOBILE COUNTY FINANCIAL UPDATEFinance
The 02/28/2013 budget report reflects general fund revenue and expenditures for the first five months of fiscal 2013. Through February we have completed 42% of the fiscal year. Our year to date revenue through February 2013 was $61,708,040.98. This represents 50.88% of budgeted FY 2013 revenue. Receipt of many of our major revenues lag by one month. Most of the property tax revenue and business license revenue is collected in December and January. The year-to-date expenditures through February are $45,631,222.22. This is 36.94% of total budgeted expenditures for the fiscal year. We expect expenditures to be below 42% on this report. The health, sanitation and culture and recreation functions are primarily appropriations that are paid quarterly. Through February, both expenditures and revenues are within expected ranges.
