Semmes Senior Center Grand Opening

Exciting news for Mobile County and Commission District 2!! Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this eagerly awaited Grand Opening event. The new Semmes Senior Center (formerly the Blackwell-Batson Estate) was purchased by the county and is in the final stages of renovation. Funding for the project was provided to Mobile County through a federal HUD (CDBG) Community Development Block Grant. The center's interior furnishings and equipment were made possible by funds donated to the Semmes Woman's Club through many generous community benefactors. Click Here for a complete listing to date of the Semmes Senior Center room sponsors, contributors, and memorials.

The Semmes Woman's Club is partnering with Mobile County to manage and operate the senior center facility, and will hire and oversee a program director to manage operations on a day-to-day basis. Many thanks to the Semmes Woman's Club, the City of Semmes, and to all the individuals and businesses who have so generously provided help and assistance to make the Semmes Senior Center a reality! What a great collaboration and partnership on this wonderful project!

Following the grand opening, senior citizens, age 62 and older, may become center members. There will be an annual individual membership fee of $40. The only additional charges for center activities will be for arts and crafts supplies for classes. After the initial few weeks of operation, catered hot lunches will be made available for purchase and served on certain scheduled days. The center will be open on weekdays, Monday through Friday. Hours are yet to be finalized. If you would like to volunteer your time at the center or your expertise in teaching classes or seminars, please contact the center through e-mail at semmesseniorcenter@yahoo.com and provide your name, telephone number, and area of volunteer interest. Hope to see you on April 11!

Warmest Regards,

Connie

cranfordburnsDISTRICT TWO SCHOOLS RECEIVE ASSISTANCE
ELIZABETH FONDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Elizabeth Fonde Elementary School, 3956 Cottage Hill Road, received funds from Mobile County District 2 to pave the circular drive at the school entrance.

According to Principal Katryna Ellis, "This project was a priority because of the safety of our students and parents. The unpaved area created a traffic nightmare during take-in and dismissal. Also, the paved driveway now alleviates the traffic backup on Cottage Hill Road and the paved area is aesthetically appealing to the Azalea Road side of Fonde. We are appreciative of the support from Commissioner Hudson that made this project possible"

CRANFORD BURNS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Cranford Burns Middle School, 6175 Girby Road, recently received assistance from Mobile County District 2 to complete an athletic field improvement project. The County purchased sand for the physical education and football field.

Principal Adams expressed his appreciation to the County Commission: "Thank you Commissioner Hudson, for your commitment assisting with this project. It will improve our school and make our play and athletic areas safe for our children in this community."
crimemappingSHERIFF'S OFFICE OFFERS REAL TIME CRIME MAPPING

The Sheriffs department has an improved feature on its website at www.mobileso.com. There is a crime mapping section under "My Neighborhood" on the homepage.  The page shows users how to do their own crime mapping for all Sheriff's Office cases, in the unincorporated areas of Mobile County and in the City of Mobile

Crime mapping is used by analysts in law enforcement agencies to map, visualize, and analyze crime incident patterns. Mapping crime, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), allows crime analysts to identify crime hot spots, along with other trends and patterns. Crime analysts use crime mapping and analysis to help law enforcement make better decisions, target resources, and formulate strategies, as well as for tactical analysis.

The crime mapping feature provides crime data in real time, updated every ten minutes around the clock. The public can quickly see where a crime is committed by using a web browser or a mobile device. Users select a location where the crime occurred and then they have the ability to choose a street view, satellite view, normal map view, or even a hybrid view. A hyperlink is also provided to anonymously share tips on a particular crime.

A user may also choose to filter crimes by the crime type, a certain date or by a landmark such as a church or a school. Streetscan, a notification system, has also been developed which will allow users to be notified by email if crimes are committed within an area that they specify. There is a fee associated with this subscription. Citizens can pay $19.95 annually to receive this service. Click Here to subscribe to this service.
