MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER CONNIE HUDSON

Happy 2013 everyone! I hope your new year is off to a healthy and productive start. The holiday season was certainly eventful in Mobile County. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the damaging tornadoes during Christmas week. In spite of the property damage, which was quite extensive, in some areas of midtown Mobile, it was miraculous that no one sustained personal injuries. Truly a blessing for which to be thankful!

With all the upcoming events and activities in Mobile County, including Senior Bowl later this month, and Mardi Gras in early February, there's always something happening. Please be sure to check out the calendar of events in this newsletter. Also, please let me know of any upcoming events that your neighborhood association or charitable organization is planning so they can be included in future e-newsletter editions.

Best wishes and thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to serve you.

Warmest Regards,

Connie

semmessheriff MOBILE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE PROVIDING SERVICES TO THE CITY OF SEMMES

On December 10, 2012 the Mobile County Commission approved a $440,570.87 contract between the Mobile County Sheriff's Office and the City of Semmes for enhanced police services in the Semmes jurisdiction. The Mobile County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) provided one supervisor and five deputies for the City of Semmes. The MCSO will cover the City of Semmes 24 hours a day seven days a week. In addition to these officers and without any additional costs to the City, Semmes will receive the additional support listed below, according to Lori Myles, the Public Relations Director for the MCSO:

DETECTIVE SUPPORT - All criminal complaints requiring additional investigation and follow up would be assigned to a detective.

MAJOR CRIMES - Any serious incident involving a death or violent offense would have a major crimes detective.

CRIME SCENE & IDENTIFICATION - The MCSO has a fully staffed unit to handle all crime scenes and evidence.

SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICS TEAM (SWAT) - The MCSO maintains a fully trained and equipped SWAT team.

NARCOTICS - Semmes would continue to receive the dedicated support of the specialized narcotics unit to follow up on any illegal drug deals.

CRIME PREVENTION UNIT - The MCSO full-time deputies would remain available to work with the businesses, schools, and citizenry in educational and prevention efforts.

TRAINING - The Sheriff's Office has a full time training unit that will keep the assigned deputies certified and trained in the latest law enforcement trends.

LEGAL SUPPORT- The MCSO has an attorney on staff available to assist with cases.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT - The Sheriff and his staff will be responsible for all law enforcement needs for the City.

FACILITIES - The deputies will work out of the Semmes sub-station, eliminating the need for the City to invest in any structure or be responsible for any utilities, phones, etc.

According to City of Semmes Mayor Judy Hale, "We have already begun to notice a tremendous difference- our citizens feel and are safer with this more focused approach to crime prevention in our area. The City of Semmes is proud to partner with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office."

 MOBILE COUNTY FINANCIAL UPDATEFinance
The 11/30/2012 budget report reflects general fund revenue and expenditures for two months of fiscal 2013. Through November we have completed 17% of the fiscal year. For November 2012 we reported revenue of $15,559,021.56. This represents 12.86% of budgeted FY 2013 revenue. Receipt of many of our major revenues lag by one month. Most of the property tax revenue and business license revenue will be collected in December and January. The year to date expenditures through November are $17,473,968.74. This is 14.70% of total budgeted expenditures for the fiscal year. We expect expenditures to be below 17% on this report. The health, sanitation and culture and recreation functions are primarily appropriations that are paid quarterly. The Expenditure in the Capital Outlay area is related to carryover funds from FY 2012. This will be amended into the budget as soon as the FY 2012 year end reconcilement is complete. Through November both expenditures and revenues are within expected ranges.
