'Tis the Season to think about Amending Tax Returns!
| And do a check-in with your SDK accountant |
The April tax deadline is in the rear view mirror and your return is filed for another year. It's common at that point to not think about your taxes until next year. While you're mentally ready to move on you may become aware that you have omitted forms from your original filing, received corrected forms after filing, or any other mistake that requires attention. So, now what? Should you amend, or should you not? This time of year that's a common question, so the IRS compiled a list of 10 tips everyone should consider and hopefully benefit from.
As helpful as the IRS tips are, there are many additional factors that need to be considered and evaluated when deciding to amend a return or not. |
No Mileage Log, No Vehicle Deduction
Record-keeping is essential

Tax season may be over, but keeping strict records throughout the year remains important. One item often overlooked is tracking vehicle mileage for business purposes. If your company is audited by the IRS, they will more than likely request documentation, such as mileage logs, for any vehicle expense deductions reported for the year. Discrepancies and lack of documentation have caused many taxpayers to lose their deduction, and in some instances, faced penalties for understating their tax liability.
Taxpayers are allowed to deduct actual expenses, including gas, maintenance, insurance, and other operating expenses. However, strict rules have been enforced on documentation to qualify for the deduction. If keeping track of all receipts related to expenses for the vehicle seems inefficient, a standard mileage deduction can be taken. The IRS has determined that 54 cents can be deducted per mile for business purposes in 2016, down from 57.5 cents per mile in 2015.

Let's table that thought...
| Another Excel lesson from Cassie |
The opportunities for learning a new trick in Excel are almost endless, but here's a single tip that has several great benefits. In Excel's most recent versions, the "tables" feature is now super user-friendly and functional. Whenever you have a list or population of data, this feature is likely to only make your life easier.
To try it, put your cursor anywhere in your data population. Then choose "Insert," "Table" from your menu options.
Excel will take an educated guess at what information you'd like to be in your table, and you can either confirm or tweak its listed cells. After selecting "ok," Excel will magically format your table, along with providing a slew of other features you'll realize as you continue working. The benefits are almost as endless as that contraption they're selling on the 2 am infomercials!

Joe Kenyon penned an article for this month's issue of Attorney At Law
Titled, Bringing Clarity To Financial Disputes With A Neutral Accounting Expert, the article discusses when a neutral accounting expert can help with dispute resolution.
When parties are at odds about complex financial, accounting and tax matters, using a forensic accountant for a neutral evaluation can help to resolve issues quickly and cost effectively. Instead of paying high fees to two experts who may end up fighting with each other, a jointly hired neutral expert allows for closure sooner and at a lower cost.
