Girl Scouts

October 3, 2014

Highlight of the Week

The Girl Scout motto is

 "Be prepared."

In the 1947 Girl Scout Handbook, the motto was explained this way:

"A Girl Scout is ready to help out wherever she is needed.
Willingness to serve is not enough.
You must know how to do the job well, even in an emergency."

The same ideas are true today.

GSSI wants to make sure that YOU, as a girl member, parent, or adult volunteer, are ready to have the best Girl Scout experience!

Some tips to help you "be prepared:"

Girls-Make sure you have the basic equipment you need for Girl Scouting, like the Journey your troop has chosen and the Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting. Check What Every Girl Scout Needs for a complete list of what you need.

Families-Study the Girl Scout Safety Guidelines, learn more about Girl Scouting through the Girl Scouting 101 learning module, talk to  your Girl Scout about her Girl Scout activities, or volunteer to help with troop activities.

Volunteers-Review Volunteer Essentials and Safety Activity Checkpoints regularly, check out the many learning opportunities GSSI offers, and visit the council Web site often so you'll keep current on opportunities for your troop.

Community service

Girl Scouting always encourages helping others.  Contact your local animal shelter, food pantry, nursing home, church, school, hospital, veteran's organization, and more. The needs are many and the girls have the desire to serve! Check out these volunteer opportunities and contacts, listed on our Web site under "Program", "Leader Resources".  (Note: Girl Scouts cannot fundraise for other organizations but can certainly provide services and support them in other ways. Contact Aimee Stachura, if you have any questions.)

Pat on the Back!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GSSI has so many great volunteers and staff who are generous with their time and talent! A big thank you goes to:
Shawn Layton and Erica Rummel, for their hard work in organizing the Girl Scout parade floats for the Holland Fest and for the Herbstfest in Huntingburg.  Also, to Erica Rummel for organizing games at the Holland Fest for kids to play.  Erica and her helpers did an awesome job.  Also, thanks to Jen Verkamp, for making sure we all have great banners to use now.  They are AWESOME! (from Georgianna Judy)
Would you like to give a "Pat-on-the-Back" to a special person who went that extra mile or stepped in to help without being asked?  Send an email to Margaret  with the name of the volunteer or staff member and how he/she helped out.  Pats-on-the-Back will be published in each issue of this eNewsletter.
Cookie Program Updates
Two Quarters
Two quarters don't seem like much. What can you buy with two quarters these days? We have dollar stores but no fifty cent stores. The truth is...two quarters don't buy you much. You can't even download a single song for fifty cents!
However, by increasing the price of cookies by just two quarters, GSSI is going to help more girls grow into leaders. These quarters will help girls develop five crucial life skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.These quarters are going to help fund troop activities, improve camp properties, and extend Girl Scouting to every girl who wants to join. These two quarters are going to change girls' lives. These are the kinds of things that GSSI will make happen with these two quarters. They represent the increase in the price of a package of Girl Scout Cookies from $3.50 to $4.00 in GSSI's 2015 Girl Scout Cookie Program. Where else will two quarters buy so much, do so much? Girl Scouts provides incredible opportunities for girls and knows how to make every cent count. Where else could fifty cents make so many good things happen?
Change in delivery and storage Agent in 2015
Belmont Moving and Storage will be GSSI's delivery and storage agent for the 2015 Cookie Program.
In honor of the 2015 Cookie Program mascot, the polar bear, GSSI invites girl members to join in a campaign to gather spare change, put it all together, and bring it to the council office, or send it in, so that, together, we can adopt one or more polar bears through the World Wildlife Fund. No amount is too small to donate, and all girls who participate will receive a commemorative patch. Deadline to submit change is October 31. Leaders, be sure to send the names of all girls who participate, so that they can receive a patch.
