Greetings!

Every May, parishes throughout the country, celebrate the reception of First Communion by their young members. This can provide a good opportunity for all Catholics to reflect on the importance and meaning of the Eucharist in their lives, as well as the lives of the children who will receive it for the first time.

Most Catholics, I believe, understand that it is fundamental part of our faith that the very "central reality" of bread and wine is changed in the celebration of the Eucharist. In theology that is referred to as the "substance" of the bread and wine. Even though the outward appearance, texture and taste remain unchanged, the "substance" is changed into the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ. Since the substance has changed, the Eucharist can no longer be treated as bread. That is why it must be stored, or "reserved," with special reverence, when the Mass is finished.

It is also important to reflect on the reason why Jesus chose food as the instrument of his union with his disciples. Jesus has said that we are to remain in him as he remains in us (John 15:4). When we eat or drink, that food truly becomes a part of us. It enters us and gives us strength. It is easy to understand why it is such a fitting way to experience our sacramental union with Christ in Holy Communion.

 Grief Is A Universal Experience

By Carol Finke

It has been said that when we lose a parent, we lose our past.  When we lose a spouse, we lose our present. And when we lose a child, we lose a future.

The time immediately following the death of a loved one to several weeks, months or even years has proven to be one of the most difficult to cope with in one's lifetime.

One is suddenly faced with how to manage this long, difficult, painful process of finding and developing life beyond loss. Whenever one is faced with loss, they experience grief.

The Healing Hearts Ministry is a grief support group for individuals that have lost a loved one through death. Our mission is to provide support, comfort and hope through faith, education and prayer.

The Healing Hearts Ministry support group meets monthly. The meetings are held at the Church of St. Michael Catholic Church oin the Archangels Hall (lower level of the church) on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Changes in meetings can be viewed on the Healing Hearts Ministry webpage by visiting the St. Michael website to view any possible changes in monthly meetings.

Parish Council
PARISH COUNCIL CORNER
By Barbara Stark

This year, one of the Parish Council goals was to learn more about our Parish ministries. We wanted to better understand their important role in our Church; and become more aware of who is being served, and how the ministries function and communicate with each other, with parishioners, and with the parish office. In order to facilitate this task, we enlisted the help of ministry leadership and Parish office staff; asking them to complete a brief questionnaire. I'm pleased to report, all of the ministries have now responded and this part of the task is now complete.

The Parish Council is extremely grateful and wish to express our sincere appreciation to all of the those representing their ministry, for their time and effort to provide us with information about the important work they do. This has been a journey of discovery revealing the great passion and heart of the volunteers within the Church of St. Michael.

Moving forward, the Parish Council will prayerfully study the ministry responses to learn how we might strengthen our parish, better support our precious volunteers, and ask the Holy Spirit to light the "flame of service" in those of all ages, who have yet to experience the full extent of God's plan for them.
