March, 2013

Greetings!

During the seasons of Lent and Easter we profess our faith using the very ancient "Apostles' Creed." The Apostles' Creed is the creed that has been used with the Sacrament of Baptism for many centuries. Lent is a time when we prepare to recommit ourselves to our Baptismal Faith and to our Baptismal promises and during Easter we celebrate that recommitment. The use of the Apostles' Creed during Mass is not only allowed, but it is especially appropriate during this time of year.

However, I have often been questioned by people who do not understand the phrase in the creed that professes that Jesus "descended into hell." For many people, that phrase makes no sense, at all. I would, therefore, like to try to clarify what that phrase is really all about.

Over the centuries, words like "hell" and "hades" and "gehenna" have been used in different ways with slightly different meanings. In the Apostles' Creed the word "hell" does not mean "the place of the damned." It simply means the dwelling place of the dead. If we believe that the resurrection of Jesus conquered the power of sin and death, then the question may arise: what happened to people who died before the resurrection of Jesus? How are we to understand the situation of great people of faith, like Abraham and David and Jeremiah, after they died? How could the righteous, who died before the resurrection of Jesus, ever hope to enter into the Kingdom of God?

LENTEN EVENINGS
 OF RENEWAL
MARCH 17-19TH

Lent has a funny way of slipping by year after year. Although the typical Lenten sacrifices - no meat on Fridays, fasting on Ash Wednesday, giving up chocolate/soda/etc. - are unusual compared to our typical rhythm of life, Lent can start to become familiar and predictable each year.

When Lent starts to become predictable and easy, it's likely that we're missing the point - that Lent is the time of the year when we are most able to discover God, who is standing right behind us and just waiting for us to turn around!

This Lent, you have a unique chance to do something different and powerful. You have the chance to Discover God - right here, right now! Join the Church of St. Michael for three amazing and challenging nights of food, faith and fun to help you on your Lenten journey.

Fr. Geoff Rose Our Lenten Evenings of Renewal will be led by Father Geoff Rose, an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales from central Michigan. He is a nationally renowned presenter and presider, and he has what it takes to give you a new and fresh vision of Lent and your own faith experience!

These Evenings of Renewal will take place on March 17, 18 and 19 from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m., at the Church of St. Michael in Prior Lake.  A simple supper will be served at 6:00 p.m. each night.

The Lenten season is a great time for us to do some deep spiritual reflection. Only three more Sunday's left until Palm Sunday where we will celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday begins the Holy Week and leads us to Last Supper and the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a time of reflection, reconciliation, and renewal. This is why we would like to invite you to attend the Lenten Evenings of renewal taking place March 17th, 18th, & 19th with Fr. Geoff Rose. Fr. Rose is a dynamic speaker whose common sense approach and clarity of instruction will draw you in and keep you coming.
