We are delighted to welcome two new members to the Board of Directors, Steve Smith and Kathy Rama Tellis. Steve is the Area Executive for the Howard County market for BB&T. Kathy is retired from the federal Department of Health and Social Services.

Cathy Cope, Pam Guzzone and Lisa Hussman were re-elected to the Board.

Thank you to all for your service to The Arc of Howard County. We look forward to another great year!

BB&T Lighthouse Project Benefits The Arc

BB&T Lighthouse Project
BB&T selected The Arc of Howard County as a local beneficiary of its 2013 Lighthouse Project. Twenty-five volunteers spent 100 hours over the course of three afternoons digging, planting, and mulching the gardens, as well as tackling much needed staining of the wooden planters and courtyard benches. With a refreshed look, the grounds are ready for summer.

Thank you, BB&T!

Richard Dean Receives MACS Award
Richard Dean MACS Award
Richard Dean (left) was presented the 2013 MACS Volunteer Award by MACS President-Elect Kathleen Durkin and Executive Director Laura Howell.
Congratulations to Richard Dean, who was recognized for his service to The Arc of Howard County at the Maryland Association of Community Services (MACS) Volunteer Award Luncheon on June 19. Richard has been involved with The Arc of Howard County for almost two decades and has served on nearly every committee and held every office. He has been a valuable advisor and a leader who has led by example through his personal engagement, shared expertise and financial generosity.

Richard has a long tenure with The Arc. From 1996 to 2002, a period of growth for The Arc, he served as an outstanding Board Member and served every office with distinction: Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President and President. In 2001, Richard joined the Capital Campaign Committee, helping The Arc take a giant step forward in expanding our headquarters on Homewood Road. He is the current Chair of the Resource Development Committee and former Chair of the Nominating Committee. In addition, Richard most recently chaired The Arc's hugely successful 50th Anniversary Campaign, which engaged a wide variety of people in raising funds for The Arc.

Arc Maryland Honors Cathy Hiett

Cathy Hiett
Cathy Hiett (left) was honored by The Arc of Maryland for her valued service and support.  Pictured with The Arc Maryland Executive Director Kate Fialkowski.
In June, The Arc of Maryland and its Board honored Cathy Hiett with a Certificate of Appreciation for her valuable contribution in supporting The of Arc Maryland's many meetings held at the Arc of Howard County's office on Homewood Road. Our office is a central location for the State, which makes it a convenient meeting spot; but this is only one reason for holding the meetings here. The Arc of Maryland also chooses our office because of the superior support they receive from Cathy Hiett. She is "responsive, supportive, and generous. She helps us in any way she can think. She makes it easy and comfortable to ask for help and guidance. Cathy is a wonderful welcome when we arrive - it's like coming 'home,'" said Carol Fried, President of The Arc of Maryland.

Congratulations Cathy!
Annual Picnic Was a Blast

Picnic collage
The Arc's Annual Picnic was held on June 18 at Centennial Park in Ellicott City. The event that started back in the 1990's as a fun gathering for our residential program has grown into an organization-wide outing with over 300 attendees. Needless to say, it takes a great deal of planning, organization and people power to make the picnic happen.

Great thanks to Charlotte Smith, Brenda Sackandy and the dozens of staff and volunteers who put forth the energy and effort - from months of pre-planning, to grocery shopping, to loading/unloading all the essentials, to firing up/manning the grill, to post-picnic clean up -all to ensure the picnic's success! Thank you to DJ Tom, who was back again this year spinning the tunes. Thanks also to Jennifer Coyne and Team Embrace for joining in the festivities, organizing the magician, and offering the seated massage.

In the words of Charlotte Smith, Transportation Supervisor and Chief Picnic Organizer:

"The picnic and holiday party are the best...our group lives for it."

Umbrella Entry Receives Honorable Mention

Umbrella Exhibit
The Arc of Howard County's entry into the Columbia Art Center's Annual Umbrella Exhibit Art Contest was awarded an Honorable Mention (Adult Group) by the judges' panel. The exhibit, which was held on June 21 at the Lake Kittamaqundi lakefront, is part of Columbia's annual birthday celebration festivities. A panel comprised of two professional artists and one community member judged the entries based on originality, composition and adherence to theme.

The Arc's entry into the contest/exhibition was organized by Jessica Dalrymple, Bonnie Cronin and Barbara Moyer, who rallied a group, including several people from our employment and day programs, to join in the fun of painting the umbrella.

The theme for this years' exhibit was "Respect". Each person had his/her own panel to paint and decorate. Everyone had a great time adding their personal touches to The Arc's umbrella. The art piece included a rainbow of colors, was adorned with 3D embellishments, and rounded off with a quote from Temple Grandin, "Different, Not Less."

The umbrella is now proudly on display in our headquarters lobby. Congratulations to all who contributed to this award-winning effort!
