Medication Safety
           by Shelly Slaczka

As a caregiver it is important to pay attention to medication safety.  It can be hard to get a handle on medication but medications are powerful, especially when more than one is being used.  Medication maybe intended to help make your loved one feel better, but if not used properly the medications can also be harmful.  Here are some guidelines to help caregivers manage medications:
  • Work with the doctor and pharmacist
  • Coordinate with all care providers
  • Ask doctor or pharmacist to check for possible drug interactions
  • Get details
  • Take as directed
  • If swallowing is a problem, ask if medication is available in another form
  • Maintain medication records
  • Use a pill box organizer
  • Develop a routine for giving the medication
  • Use simple language and clear instructions
  • If person refuses to take the medication, stop and try again later
  • Have emergency numbers easily accessible
