Where has the summer gone!  I have just returned from the 17th International Handbell Symposium in Vancouver BC.  It was a wonderful week of ringing, catching up with old friends and socializing with new handbell friends from around the world. Did you know that there is a Macau Handbell Association?  That Australians ring their bells like the Brits-that is they back ring off the table.  I was inspired by the precise and musical ringing of the Japanese and Hong Kong students, thinking of ways I can try to get my choirs to that precision.  The fellowship with the "rogue" members of the Rogue Ringers from around the country was great.  We all had a great and sometimes frustrating time learning to follow eight different conductors who were directing 750 ringers whose style of ringing and skill levels varied greatly.  I enjoyed the showcase concerts presented by ringers from every nation at the event and hope to include some of the lovely music presented in the up coming ringing year.  I am also happy to report that Area 10 was well represented, perhaps up to 10%, of the 750 attendees.  And I am planning on the 19th International Handbell Symposium in 2018 that will be held in Cairns, Australia.  But now summer is coming to an end and the ringing season for my church choir begins on August 29th.  I will begin to finalize the music for worship services through Christmas Eve and plan what kind of exercises we will need to do to improve our ringing precision.

Bells and Organ - a Win-Win Eagle Scout Project

Andrew Coleman
I LOVE music. It started about 8 years ago. I first started to take piano lessons from my grandmother - who has influenced my musical career. I have been playing the piano for almost 8 years and organ for 3 years. I have also played percussion in band, and I want to expand my "arsenal" of musical instruments. Thank You to The Presbyterian Church and their Handbells, Sue Miller and Barbara Mix for all the wonderful help and support with my Eagle Project.
The Twin Falls, Idaho Hallelujah Handbells participated in a unique community concert for a talented Boy Scout's Eagle Project.  Andrew Coleman is an organ student of Hallelujah Handbell Choir director, Barbara Mix.

His goal was to organize a concert for the community and with the donations to provide funds for his scout project - the Hallelujah Handbell's practice room. The Saturday afternoon concert featured the Presbyterian Church pipe organ, Hallelujah Handbell Choir, and hymn singing.

The concert and project was supported by the LDS South Stake, First Presbyterian Church, and members of the community. Andrew's generous concert donations will provide needed equipment, supplies, and upgrades to our practice room.

We will have 3 new file cabinets, new table foam and covers for five octaves of bell tables, storage shelves with cubbies for each ringer (adult choir and two youth choirs), blocks to raise the height of practice tables, and some new music, when we resume rehearsals in September. Some of the funds will also help with the refurbishing of needy handbells this summer.

This unique project has been a blessing to our handbell program and an ecumenical outreach to our community. In our collaboration with College and Community Chorales, South Stake Christmas Chorale Pageants, etc, we share the joy of handbell ringing.
