From the Chair's computer ...

Today is Leap Day - one extra day in February to get this penned in time for the March Newsletter. Even with one extra day February seems to have flown by! Holy Week and Easter are just around the corner and before you know it the end of our ringing season is here. This is the time of year when I often feel a bit wrung out and look for inspiration for the rest of the ringing season. One place I go to is the Member Resource Center on the Handbell Musicians of America website. This resource page has short articles to help inspire you and your ringers. Some titles are: "See it, Hear it, Do it", "Handbells in Contemporary Worship" or "Bell Tress". Another location that is a "go to" for inspiration is past issues of Overtones' "Tips & Tools"; you can go online to access archived editions back to 2008 or just browse your personal collection of Overtones. These resources may just provide you with that nugget of information that helps a ringer get over a bump in the road. Also, it is not too early to plan to attend an off season educational event around the Region; Area 12 and 11, are holding their summer biennial festivals or Nationally at the National Seminar. Happy Ringing!

Around the Area and Beyond...

If you can't wait till the summer for some inspiration check out the ringing/learning events happening around the area. Also, it is not too late to attend the 17th International Handbell Symposium in Vancouver, BC.

Handchime Loan Program Report

Below are pictures of the Children's Chime Program of the Congregational-Presbyterian Church, Lewiston, Idaho begun this year with a set of Area 10's loaner chimes. The children are Ian Franklin, Julia Franklin, Kason Van Buren, Ketcher Van Buren, Caleb Hyndman, and Preston Scoles. The children range in age from 5 - 10 and represent 3 different schools in the Clarkston, Washington and Lewiston, Idaho valley. Greg Thompson directs the children assisted by one father, Bob Franklin and one grandmother, Cynda Hyndman. One youngster is visually impaired so plays by ear and memorizes his part. One of the children has a school friend who has rung chimes and plans to join them next week. Greg said the rehearsals last a half hour. Caleb wants to learn vibrato. Ketcher expressed a wish to have longer rehearsals. For the younger children a half hour has been a good length of time. The kids are working on 'Kum ba Yah' and 'Jesus Loves Me' which they are planning to play for the congregation on Mother' s Day.

Congregational-Presbyterian Church would like to thank Area 10 for loaning us the chimes this year. In particular, we'd like to thank Micki Mennet-Martin for introducing the loaner program to us and for encouraging our church to apply. It was the stimulus we needed to get our kids started ringing. It provides another way for our kids to become actively involved in our worship, and hopefully, will also bring new blood into our adult handbell program. The adult handbell choir is enjoying playing the loaner chimes as well.

The church who borrowed this same set of chimes last year has begun a program to purchase their own set. They have made a poster with the name of each specific chime and its price. Someone wanting to buy a specific chime signs on the board.
