What's Your Story? National has been asking this question of its current Members-Well, here is my story.

In 1980, just out of college and a new member at the church I attended, I was asked if I wanted to ring bells. I answered "What are bells? And I guess so." Thus began my ringing career as new bells were purchased with a memorial gift given for this purpose, and a new bell choir was formed. We were directed by Dave, a trained musician who had seen a handbell choir once and owned a record (yes, vinyl) of a handbell choir performance. He vaguely understood how to ring and damp the bells. It was the blind leading the blind. The handbell choir did well since we all played piano, a wind or string instrument so we knew how to read music and understand rhythms. However, that did not make mastering the ringing technique easy. We persevered and played music that, today, would be considered Level 2+ to 3 as rank beginners. We all had fun and success in our beginning efforts in the formation of this choir. I was hooked. This same handbell choir played at my wedding in 1984 (instead of an organ). Over the years my husband and I moved to a different town and state and then overseas to Germany with the Army. Through it all I kept up with the bells, joined AGEHR (now Handbell Musicians of America). I began directing handbell choirs in Germany and found the Overtones Issues full of helpful hints, suggestions and encouragement. It was a life line for me and my efforts to get the best out of my ringers, I didn't have local handbell directors to kibitz with. There was a loose handbell community among the handbell choirs on Military bases/posts which organized an annual festival. These festivals were organized based on people's experiences with AGEHR festivals in the States. This annual event allowed all the ringers a chance to get to know ringers from around Germany, experience a massed ringing event, and learn from talented clinicians; all were invaluable experiences in my development as a ringer and director. In 2002 we moved back to the States permanently, settling in the Rogue Valley, Oregon. I founded the handbell program at my church and co-founded a community bell choir, both in Medford, OR. Since then I have been active in the Guild, attending the annual National Seminar, taking part in local and regional ringing/learning opportunities and participating in several Masters Conducting Classes, all in an effort to become a better handbell choir director and musician. Because I am committed to the Guild and the advancement of the Art of Handbell Ringing I have given of my time and talents to Area 10 in leadership positions. Passing on what I have gained from the Guild to others as they travel along their road to becoming a better handbell musician.

Ringing has brought me great joy, friendships that I cherish and the ability to share my music with my church family. Through the Guild I became part of an extended bell family that I get to see on a regular basis throughout the year when attending a regional, local, or national event. Because of the Guild and what it has provided to me as a ringer and director my life has been made rich.
