If you are like me, you are very busy with rehearsals and getting ready for concerts and ringing during worship services. Have you considered sharing your music with others in the community? Retirement centers and nursing homes are great places to visit during December as well as other months of the year. Helping the Salvation Army by a kettle is also a fun way to have your group help others. From ring along books to 8- and 12-bell music collections, the joy of our instrument can be shared in very easy ways. If you do spread the joy in the community, send me a picture and we can have a photo gallery next month of how we helped our community.

There are several conferences coming up this spring all across Area 10. Find one close by for you and your choir to attend. It is always exciting to ring under various clinicians and network with all the other musicians.

Please forward this to your choir members and to anyone else who would be interested in all the concerts and events. Encourage them to subscribe to the newsletter. Click "Join our mailing list" at the bottom of the left column or click the newsletter link on our website, area10.handbellmusicians.org. With permission, I can also add names and addresses.

December is upon us-the busiest season in the life of a Handbell Musician. We find ourselves booked multiple days of a week every week leading up to Christmas; sometimes we feel overwhelmed with the rehearsals and performances on our schedule, wondering how we will ever get through this season of joy still feeling joyful. But, I then remember that I love what I am doing! Playing wonderful arrangements of Christmas Carols and Songs on bells, bringing joy to those who hear the music while I am energized and with an uplifted spirit each time I rehearse or perform - remembering the beautiful message that is Christmas which is the heart of the music we are sharing. One of my favorite Christmas Hymns/Songs (I have a hard time choosing) is "In the Bleak Midwinter"; it is the perfect combination of words (Christina Rossetti ) and melody (Holst) asking us to meditate on "what can I give Him?" and then answering with "give my heart". So this Christmas Ringing Season - give your heart to the music so that those who listen might hear the Hope, Peace and Joy that comes with the news of the Birth of the Savior of the World.

What's Happening in Area 10

Area 10 vert logo From the By-Laws: "The primary objectives of the organization shall be to educate, to promote the exchange of ideas relating to handbell and handchime ringing, and to sponsor educational activities..."

To help meet the primary objectives the board has created the appointed position of Events Coordinator; this position is intended to be the Area-Wide Conference Coordinator and to be a resource to help facilitate the organization and execution of Regional and Local ringing and workshop events. Area 10 is about 400,000 sq miles (not including Alaska) - and we feel that the educational needs of the area can be better met with the addition of events that happen closer to where your choir is located - keeping the total expense of an event lower because travel and lodging expense would be very little or non-existent. SO, If you are contacted by your State Chair and asked if you would like to organize a 3-4 choir event at your church or school consider saying yes, I will! OR If you already want to organize an event for a few of the bell choirs in your local area contact your State Chair and get the ball rolling. Don't know how to set about organizing an event, finding a clinician, locating a venue? Don't worry; the Events Coordinator is your resource with the information you will need to get started.

In order to facilitate more local ringing/workshop events we need to provide a list of talented Ringers and Directors from Area 10 to those who want to organize an event. Share your skills with Area 10 and join the list of willing clinicians by contacting: Diane Barnes at [email protected].

Growing as a Musician

Music making is like happiness. Stephanie Judy in her book "Music for the Joy of It" talks about how music is a path, not a destination and everyone is entitled to learn, to join, to work hard, and to thrive. The immense satisfaction that group handbell music making offers is the pure joy of coming together. As a handbell group, the drawbacks of ensemble playing are tolerable for most musicians.

As nearly all handbell groups are performing ensembles we need many skills for group playing. Handbell choir skills are basically the same as for other music ensembles: extended awareness of how all the parts fit together, balance of sound - hearing themselves and one another, catching tempos, sharing rhythms, making entrances, and finding your place when you are lost.

If you are a learner in the midst of experts, you may feel apprehensive and inspired at the same time. It will probably help everyone if you speak up early and briefly to explain that the music is too hard for you but that you will give it your best. Everyone has been in this situation at some time. Even if the ringers won't wait for you, it's likely they understand what you are going through. It is true that an inexperienced ringer is pulled up by a strong group.

In December as we are ringing Christmas music for church services, concerts and programs at schools, symphony halls, colleges and community events remember that music is not the instrument - the music is you. Let the polishing begin!

Bell Trees in Worship and Concert

Would you like to add some extra pizzazz to your concerts - or utilize your bells more often in worship? Bell trees could be just what you are looking for: using only a few bells and very little space (no tables to set up!) you can expand ringing opportunities and showcase an exciting technique.

Westminster Concert Bells will present a workshop on bell trees by internationally-renowned bell tree soloist and clinician Barbara Brocker on Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1624 NE Hancock Street, Portland, Oregon.

This workshop will focus on bell tree basics and using bell trees in worship and concert, including peals, processionals, descants, and bell trees with vocal choirs, bell and chime choirs and other instruments.

Cost for the event is $25. Participants can bring their lunch or request a catered sandwich lunch (cost $10). Participants are also asked to bring their own bells and tree if they have them, although a few bell sets and trees will be available for those unable to do so.

For more information and /or to receive a registration form, please email Anne Stevenson, handbell director at Westminster: [email protected].
