Ask the Experts: How Loud is [INSERT GRINDER HERE]? No, we didn't forget to fill in the blank on this one. Next to 'which is the cleanest coffee grinder?' this question is one of the most often posed during a grinder discussion. It's true that some of them sound like a small jet's taking off from your kitchen counter, and we agree that it isn't always the best way to wake up those you love in the morning. But a grinder's noise is a necessary evil and we decided to find out which one -- if any -- was more evil than the rest.
Our practical test was far from scientific -- we used a smartphone app, placed the phone near the grinders in the same place, measured ambient decibel levels and then tracked the difference. We're not sound engineers and we know that there is a lot more to consider than basic decibel level ... but we learned just how much more during the test. There were models that sounded significantly more quiet or more loud simply due to a differentiation in their actual tone, yet there was minimal variance in the base decibel level. Some sounded louder to some folks than others, even though the decibel readings showed otherwise.
The gist? We suppose that, like many things in coffee, it's likely subjective and which grinder 'sounds' the loudest to you will be informed largely by your unique senses. If you'd like to watch our test in action, check out our video here.
P.S. - If you have suggestions on a simple, practical and perhaps more objective method of demonstrating this for folks that can't test these grinders themselves, please email us!
