CPCA Conference Survey Results

Everyone is looking for improvement - it is the foundation of growth. That's why everyone is interested in getting feedback, including us. We recently asked CPCA members to give us feedback in a survey on Colorado's Fall Conference, to determine if we can improve on the timing of the event, the session topics we offer or the amount of training we offer.

  • Attendees find sessions on business operations sales and management to be the most valuable
  • Legislative and regulatory issues, research updates and control strategies followed in perceived value
  • 80% of respondents prefer the meeting be held in October
  • 20% of respondents prefer the meeting be held in December

Do you agree with these results? Please take a moment to complete a survey and let us know what you think.

Tell Congress to Increase Section 179 Business Property Deduction

Without Congressional action, the Section 179 deduction level will remain at the pre-2007 level of only $25,000 rather than the previous $500,000. If you have not had a chance to participate, we strongly encourage you to take a moment and send a note to your representative.

Section 179 of the IRS tax code allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment from gross income from the year in which the the equipment was purchased, rather than writing off the depreciation of the equipment over several years. It's an incentive created by the U.S. government to encourage businesses to buy equipment and invest in themselves. Qualifying property includes equipment (machines, etc.) purchased for business use, tangible personal property used in business, air conditioning and heating units, business vehicles with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 6,000 lbs., computers, software, office equipment and office furniture.

The Section 179 deduction is widely used by our industry and this has been an important issue for our industry, including highlighting it at our Legislative Day this past March. We are continuing to push this issue with Congressional offices and are working with other industries on this very important tax benefit. Please take a brief moment to send your Congressional representatives a note urging them to act to raise the Section 179 deduction level.

EPA will grant a 30-day extension to the public comment period on the proposed changes to the certification rule. Comments must be submitted no later than Dec. 23, 2015. NPMA submitted a formal extension request, and led the Pesticide Policy Coalition (PPC) in submitting a formal request on behalf of the entire pesticide industry. This additional time has enabled NPMA to continue to work with members, state regulators and industry allies to provide thoughtful comments and critiques of the proposed rule.

The NPMA public policy staff has completed our formal comments and they are currently being reviewed by the public policy committee.  The comments will be provided to membership and submitted prior to the December 23rd deadline.

As part of the Partnership to Protect Workplace Opportunity (PPWO), a diverse coalition of industry stakeholders, NPMA public policy staff met with Congressional offices to discuss the Department of Labor's proposed overtime regulation. NPMA was joined in the Congressional office meetings with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Retail Federation (NRF), and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI). This cross section of industry representatives demonstrates the need to change the proposed overtime rule. NPMA's Policy Team will continue to communicate with Congressional offices to advocate change in the coming weeks and months.

In order to maximize our advocacy efforts
we ask that you click here and send your Congressional representatives a message expressing your concern.

Understanding the UPS and FedEx Small Package Rate Increases

Every year small package carriers FedEx and UPS evaluate their shipping rates and make adjustments that can have a substantial effect on you and your business. The UPS rate increases will be effective December 28, 2015, while the new FedEx rates take effect on January 4, 2016. As always, how much more expensive your particular small package shipments will be in the new year largely depends on many factors, including shipment volumes, sizes, weights, and modes.
Here are some quick facts:
  • FedEx Express package rates are increasing an average of 4.9% for U.S., U.S export, and U.S. import services.
  • UPS Air and International package rates are increasing an average of 5.2%.
  • FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery rates are increasing an average of 4.9%.
  • UPS Ground rates are increasing an average of 4.9%.

The important takeaway when thinking about your shipping expenses in 2016 is that the announced average increases paint an inaccurate picture of the true impact these new rates could have on your business. The small package shipping experts at PartnerShip have dug into the details and analyzed the new rate tables to assess the true impact to shippers and help you make sense of these changes. Learn more about how the 2016 rate increases will affect your shipping costs by downloading the free white paper at PartnerShip.com/RateIncrease.
