President's Message

I hope everyone has experienced a prosperous summer season and has been able to squeeze in some time for relaxation. As I move into the end of my term as CPMA President I know we will continue to face challenges with product registrations and re-evaluations, but I am confident we have developed a strong team to address them in the Pest Management Policy Committee and the NPMA Staff.

With several re-evaluations still in process including the actives, Boric Acid and Dichlorvos (Vapona), the bulk of our efforts this past year have involved providing usage data for Pyrethroids and Pyrethrins with respect to quantities used, treatment areas, application equipment and product formulations.

Membership came through in a big way to complete the survey with 142 respondents from across Canada, representing all sectors of the industry. This is an impressive rate of participation considering the time of year in which we were able to conduct the survey and should demonstrate to PMRA the desire of our entire industry to support them. The Pest Management Policy Committee, consisting of Chair, Karen Furgiuele- Percy, and members: Maurice Bourque, Kathy Cano, Sandy Costa, Steven Graff, Andy Maganga, Sean Rollo and Robert Sanders also played a large role in supporting this process by providing the scenario based usage data PMRA was seeking. Marcia Duke, NPMA Director of Regulatory Affairs, worked extensively (and tirelessly!) on formulating the survey, gathering and analyzing the data and generating the final reports. Thank you everyone for providing your expertise in helping complete this extremely important work!

Pest Management Canada in Mont Tremblant, Quebec provided membership with excellent training opportunities from Martin Latulippe's motivational and inspirational presentations on customer service and personal achievement to Martin Hardy and Faith Oi's training on practical insect identification. The venue was fantastic and many participants took advantage of the village and skiing when free time permitted.

Other activities in 2014 include participating in a conference call with the Canadian Wildlife Service and providing formal comments regarding listing bat species, Little Brown Myotis, Northern Myotis, and the Tri-colored Bat, on the Canadian Species at Risk Act list. Their listing is due to a rapid decline in the populations of these bats as a result of White Nose Syndrome - a fungus that is rapidly spreading through bat colonies via overwintering hibernacula. The CPMA comment was given with respect to how we assist in managing bat populations within structures; specifically through exclusion practices that are implemented once young are old enough to leave the maternity / summer roost.

We also worked to support Bayer in obtaining a label expansion for Drione to include wasp control options within wall voids. This label expansion will provide a new tool for PMPs to address wasps in this challenging and common nest site location.

I would like to thank everyone, membership and CPMA Board alike, that have helped support the various projects with your time, knowledge and expertise over the past year. Everyone's effort is what makes us an influential and effective association.

Finally I would like to officially congratulate Kathy Cano in being elected President-Elect of CPMA. Kathy brings a wealth of industry and regulatory knowledge with her; tools that are invaluable as we move forward in preserving and expanding our toolbox with PMRA.

Best Wishes,

Steven Graff
CPMA President

Steven Graff

Participate in the Vancouver Rat Project

The Vancouver Rat Project (VRP) is Canada's first interdisciplinary study of rats, and their potential risks to human health. As part of this research, the VRP has trapped extensively in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, and are looking to expand the scope of their research to other Canadian port cities.

Established pest control companies are an excellent resource for information on rat diseases, as their continued contact with, and extermination of rats results in the potential for additional sampling. As such, VRP's aim is to work with pest control companies to acquire a number of rats to test for pathogens known to be carried by rats.

Should you be interested in working with the VRP, please contact PhD Student Kaylee Byers, who is partnered with the VRP, at 778-980-9948 or [email protected].

Lice Happens- Don't Be Ashamed, Just Be Prepared
The Hamilton Spectator, September 15, 2014 (Hamilton)

More than a million Canadians can expect to get head lice this year, most of them children. Lice don't spread disease, and they are not a sign of uncleanliness, but when most families get their first case, they stay quiet. Read more...
