The Times of India, March 12, 2013

In a stunning exposure of pathetic conditions prevailing at the Government General Hospital (GGH) here, rats recently bit a patient in the neurology wing here.

The patient, Purnamma, was shocked to find rats nibbling at her ankle and screamed for help. The 55-year-old woman from Macherla was admitted to the GGH about a fortnight ago with some neurological disorder. Pesticide Ban's Foes Get Louder
Brandon Sun, March 25, 2013

Opposition to the NDP's plan to outlaw cosmetic lawn-care pesticides appears to be mounting, led by groups who claim the government has snubbed science in favor of a feel-good political hit.

They also say Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister

Gord Mackintosh's planned ban of the chemicals has caused needless confusion for lawn-care company customers and appears to be based more on pressure from activist groups than reason. Read more...

Distemper in Skunks has Windsor Residents Concerned
CBC News, March 13, 2013

A growing number of skunks in Windsor are showing signs of distemper and that has some people worried about their pets.

When Kyle Reid saw a skunk sauntering across the street from him, he knew something was wrong. "Just the fact they're never out during the day. The way he was lumping around ... he would walk a couple of steps and then he would shake," Reid said.

He recorded video of the skunk, which walked in circles on a sidewalk. He also called the Humane Society to see what was wrong with the animal. Reid was told it was distemper. Read more...

Health Hazards Pile Up Amid Rat Plague
IOL News, March 12, 2013

A heap of rubbish, apparently uncollected for eight months, has piled up near a block of flats, Malgisedek in Riviera, while on the veranda vendors prepare food and others sit on broken couches eating from plates on their laps.

A couple of unused vehicles, not moved in many months, are parked in overgrown grass. The flat dwellers say this has created the perfect breeding spot for rats and other vermin that roam the premises freely and go into the flats to feed.

Fleas, lice and bedbugs are just some of the parasites residents say live in the one-roomed apartments they occupy. "I am very often sick like most people who live here and always from a host of diseases," says Mkange (he did not give his first name). He'd just recovered from a month-long stomach problem caused by contaminated food, he said. Read more...

Bee-Harming Pesticides Escape Proposed European Ban
The Guardian, March 15, 2013

A European attempt to ban the world's most widely used insecticides that have been linked to serious harm in

bees has failed.

The European commission proposed a two-year suspension of neonicotinoids after the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) deemed their use an unacceptable risk, but major nations including UK and Germany failed to back the plan.

The result leaves environmental campaigners, scientists and some politicians bitterly disappointed. Read more...

Owen Paterson Set to Scupper EU Plans to Ban Pesticides Linked to Bee Harm
The Guardian, March 12, 2013

The environment secretary, Owen Paterson, appears set to defy public and political pressure by scuppering a proposed Europe-wide suspension of three pesticides linked to serious harm in bees.

Almost three-quarters of the UK public backs the ban, according to a poll released recently, but the UK is not currently expected to support the measure when the European commission (EC) votes on it, leaving it little chance of being passed. Read more...

Rat Surge Fears as Councils in Wales Cut Pest Control
BBC News, March 7, 2013

More than a quarter of Wales' councils now charge residents to get rid of rats, up from just one six years ago.

Others charge for mice, fleas, bedbugs and cockroach services, and one council has stopped pest control entirely.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) said it was concerned people not wanting to pay would ignore infestations.

Figures obtained by BBC Wales show that six of Wales' 22 councils now charge residents up to £40 to eradicate rats from inside their homes: Anglesey, Cardiff, Gwynedd, Newport, Powys and Wrexham. Read more...
