Fleet Safety and the Bottom Line

Wednesday, January 9

1:00 p.m. ET

Presented by Steve Bojan, Senior Risk Services Consultant - Transportation, HUB International Limited

Auto liability exposure is one of the most significant risks facing any pest control company. It is very difficult to control and is often not recognized by management. Small crashes have become more expensive as repair costs continue to escalate and catastrophic crashes have recently led to a number of huge jury awards. These challenges have led many insurers to increase premiums for clients that have either had poor loss histories or few safety controls in place.

To address these challenges, the Fleet Safety webinar will discuss some of risk factors associated with fleets as well as some best practices that can help to reduce your organization's risk exposure to vehicle crashes. We will discuss the ANSI z-15.1-2012 Standard that address fleet safety best practices as well as other tools that can be utilized to improve fleet safety. These best practices include effective hiring standards, driver training, and vehicle tracking. We will end our webinar with a question and answer session that allows you to address questions specific to your fleet.

Understanding Trends in Advertising

In an effort to better understand business trends in the pest management industry, the National Pest Management Association with the assistance of the Business Development Committee has recently created a series of 60-second snapshot surveys. The first survey focused on trends in advertising. After one month of the survey being available to participants, we have collected a total of 192 complete responses. Below are a few statistics we have gathered from the results. We hope this will provide you insight on how the industry as a whole advertises.
  • 45.8% told us their primary marketing objective is to increase sales.
  • 77% use an advertising agency.
  • 72% prefer online advertising over phone directory advertising.
  • 62% have found that the investment of having a social media presence has resulted in positive returns.
  • The most popular social media outlet is Facebook, with 92.9% having a company page.

Complete survey results will be published in the March/April issue of PestWorld magazine. Thank you to all who participated in the survey!

Pest Control Bill Pending in Nevada

The Nevada General Assembly is considering legislation that would amend or add definitions of terms such as "pest control," "principal," and "primary principal," increase the minimum insurance requirement from $10,000 to $50,000, delete the requirement that a primary principal licensed in the appropriate category or categories of pest control be at each business location in the state, and clarify other aspects of existing pest control law.  Click here to read Assembly Bill 20.

FDA Begins Implementing Sweeping Food-Safety Law

The Washington Post, January 4, 2013

The Obama administration recently moved ahead with the first major overhaul of the nation's food-safety system in more than 70 years, proposing tough new standards for fruit and vegetable producers and food manufacturers.

The long-awaited proposals by the Food and Drug Administration are part of a fundamental change aimed at preventing food-borne outbreaks - caused by everything from leafy greens to cantaloupes to peanut butter - rather than simply reacting to them. Every year, contaminated foods sicken an estimated 48 million Americans and kill 3,000.

The rules, which span 1,200 pages, are aimed at creating safer conditions from farm to fork. Produce farmers would be required to ensure that their crops aren't contaminated by bad water or animal waste. Some will likely be compelled to build fences to keep out wildlife and to provide adequate restrooms and hand-washing facilities for field workers. Read more...
