NPMA Announces Recipients of the Women of Excellence Award & the Young Entrepreneur Award
NPMA is pleased to announce the award recipients for two of the organization's most prestigious awards: The Women of Excellence Award, presented by Orkin, LLC, and the Young Entrepreneur Award, presented by Rentokil Pest Control.
Judy Black, vice president of technical services for Steritech's pest prevention division, has been announced as this year's recipient of the Women of Excellence Award, presented by Orkin. The Women of Excellence Award recognizes women who demonstrate outstanding leadership and have made notable contributions to the development and growth of the profession, their business, and other women in the pest management industry.
Since joining Steritech in 1994, Black has worked in a variety of technical and management roles, stepping into the position of technical director in 2005. She was promoted to vice president in early 2012. A graduate of West Virginia University, she received her bachelor of science in agriculture with an emphasis in environmental protection, as well as a master of science in entomology. She is a board certified entomologist and a member of Pi Chi Omega, the national pest control fraternity. Black also served as chair on the NPMA Technical Committee for a number of years, served on the inaugural Bed Bug Blue Ribbon Task Force and was the director of the Certification Board for the Entomological Society of America.
"Orkin is proud to support the Women of Excellence award for the fourth consecutive year," said John Wilson, president, Orkin USA. "We are pleased to highlight the extraordinary accomplishments of women in the pest management industry."
Justin McCauley, Chief Operating Officer for McCauley Services, has been announced as the first recipient of the Young Entrepreneur Award, presented by Rentokil Pest Control. The Young Entrepreneur Award recognizes young entrepreneurs (40 years of age or less) working in the professional pest management industry who have helped create or develop an industry business and/or those who have stewarded a meaningful industry concept to fruition.
In addition to his contributions to McCauley Services, McCauley is also involved in his community, serving on the Board of Directors of the Kiwanis of Saline County, Habitat for Humanity of Saline County, the National Pest Management Association, and the Arkansas Pest Management Association. Additionally, McCauley is involved in the NPMA Leadership Development Group and serves as the Head Coach of Vikings Future Panthers Football Team.
"Rentokil is extremely honored to support the first-ever Young Entrepreneur Award," said John Myers, president, Rentokil Pest Control. "This award demonstrates our commitment to developing our industry's next generation and Justin epitomizes the future of pest management."

Understanding the "Fiscal Cliff" and What It Means to You and Your Business
October 3, 2012 | 1:00 p.m. ET
Presented by Bruce Thompson, Vice President, Van Scoyoc Associates
REGISTER TODAY
"Fiscal cliff" is the popular shorthand term used to describe the conundrum that the U.S. government will face at the end of 2012. U.S. lawmakers have a choice: they can either let current policy go into effect at the beginning of 2013 which features a number of tax increases and spending cuts.
These tax increases include higher individual tax rates, capital gains and dividend rates, and estate taxes. Economic forecasts say that the tax increases and spending cuts will cause economic growth to shrink and push the economy back into a recession.
Government affairs and legal expert Bruce Thompson will describe the tax increases and spending cuts and how they will impact you and your business, as well as discuss the various legislative options facing Congress and the Administration to avert the "fiscal cliff."

NPMA Hosts "Overwintering Pests" Workshop
On Tuesday, September 18, NPMA hosted more than two dozen EPA officials and state regulators in an "Overwintering Pest" Workshop, in conjunction with the Association of Structural Pest Control Regulatory Officials and the State FIFRA Issues Research and Evaluation Group (SFIREG), a committee comprised of state officials that advises EPA. Held at the NPMA office in Virginia, the session focused on the behavior, biology and control strategies for occasional invaders, including overwintering pests. Presentations were made by NPMA's Bob Rosenberg and Jim Fredericks, Derrick Lastinger of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, representing ASPCRO, Dr. Mike Waldvogel of North Carolina State University and Dr. Dan Suiter of the University of Georgia. Fredericks also led the group on an hour long walking tour, demonstrating the use of application equipment and identifying a variety of commercial and residential pest management scenarios. NPMA, along with ASPCRO and SFIREG, have asked EPA to modify PMP pyrethroid labels to allow treatments for these pests and the workshop was an opportunity for EPA to see and learn firsthand why the changes make sense.
