SKIPPERS LEARN ABOUT SHARING
| | |
Dr. Jolie Silva, psychologist, visited Rolling River on Wednesday to speak to the 2-5 year-olds about the importance of social skills, such as sharing, taking turns, and anti-bullying. With the help of animal puppets, Dr. Silva and the Skippers practiced sharing and discussed what to do if we are being bullied.
Dr. Silva's Long Island practice is located in Rockville Centre. She and her staff provide therapy to children and adolescents for a number of issues, like behavior problems, social issues, anxiety, and depression. In addition, Dr. Silva's practice runs social skills groups for children ages 4-10.
If you are interested in seeking out services for your child or teen, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Silva:

Week 4: July 25, 2014
|
What a fantastic week down at the RIVA! We wrapped up our Parent Visiting Day and Nights, ventured out on fun trips and hosted a Skipper Teddy Bear Picnic Party.
Today we celebrated the end of Half Season 1 with Western Day, which brought out cowboys and cowgirls, a Skipper petting zoo, and a good ole-fashioned hoedown and rodeo. The older campers got to ride a bucking-bronco and many campers went on a scavenger hunt to find the "counselor outlaws" and get put them in the "county jail". Yee-hah! What a terrific way to end the first 4 weeks of summer 2014.
We wish our first half-season campers well - we'll miss you and we hope to "sea" you soon. We are also excited to greet our 2nd Half Season campers on Monday, and we know the coming weeks will bring even more fun in the sun to Rolling River Day Camp.
Anchors Aweigh,
Rhonda, Mark, Marissa, Ali, Jon and the entire Rolling River Crew

Skipper Scoop
| Updates from the RIVA Skipper Division Supervisor- Jill Bloom
Howdy y'all! This was another fantastic week at RRDC!
On Tuesday, our 2 and 3 year olds had a great Parent Visiting Day - we really loved showing off our skills at Skipper Field, Tumbling Tides, and of course, the pool.
Wednesday the Kindergarteners walked over to 5 Star, where they bounced, tumbled, and jumped. All the Skippers enjoyed a workshop on getting along with their friends and working together.
Thursday was our Skipper special event: Teddy Bear Picnic. We had a great time singing, coloring our own teddy bears, and creating and eating a yummy snack- bear paws (sugar cookies, frosting, Oreos, and chocolate chips). The best part of all: we went on a bear hunt!!! Did you see a bear? We did! It was awesome, and they were very friendly!
Cowboy boots, homemade cowboy hats, and pony rides Oh my!!!
Friday was Western Day down at the Riva' and what a great time we all had. Camp was transformed into the Wild West and the Skippers were ready. We rode ponies, visited our petting zoo, and celebrated this fun themed day.
What a great week we had! We want to say goodbye to our four week camper friends. We had a great time with you this summer. We wish you a wonderful school year and we hope to "sea" you next summer. We also want to welcome our second four week campers. There's still so much more in store for us!Thanks for another "beary" special week. Hee Haw Y'AllJill Bloom

| Health Center News: Coxsackie Fact Sheet |
Many parents have been calling about the Coxsackie virus so the health center has put together this fact sheet for your education.
1. What is Coxsackie virus?
It is an infection caused by the virus Coxsackie. There are actually five different viruses that use this name. You may also hear it called the hand, foot, and mouth disease. It was named for the town of Coxsackie, NY where it was first discovered.
2. How is the virus spread?
It is spread through close personal contact with secretions of the nose, throat and feces of infected persons. Unfortunately, chlorine used in the pool does not kill the virus.
3. Who gets Coxsackie virus?
Anyone can be infected, but the disease seems to be most evident in children under ten years of age.
4. When can a person spread the virus to others?
A person may spread the virus to others just before symptoms appear and during the acute stage of illness. The incubation period is usually 3 to 5 days.
5. What are the symptoms and when do they appear?
Three to five days after exposure, children will complain of a sore throat or sore mouth and loss of appetite. Fever of 101-102 lasts 1-2 days and is usually accompanied by sores in the mouth, hands, and feet and occasionally on the buttocks. This is a mild illness and lasts one week or less.
6. What is the treatment?
At this time, there is no specific treatment. Children should be encouraged to drink fluids, wash their hands and rest. They should stay home from camp until the fever has gone away for 24 hours.
7. What can be done to prevent the spread of this disease?
Hand washing and good personal hygiene are the best defense.
