CAMPAIGN REPORT MEETING | NOVEMBER 19, 2014

The Monadnock United Way Campaign Report Meeting moved over to Peterborough this week. Thank you to RiverMead for welcoming us, and the community, into your wonderful facility.

Meeting in the eastern part of the region provided an opportunity for many who are normally unable to travel to Keene to be a part of a Report Meeting and stay connected to the campaign. There were many guests, volunteers, and agency representatives in attendance. Thank you all for attending, and we look forward to returning!

Results from this week were still being processed, but we are around $1,150,000 (and growing). Come to the next Report Meeting at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3 at the Colony Mill in Keene and find out where we stand!

Our Giving Tuesday online fundraiser is underway. If you would like to donate to a team, join a team, or create a team, go to http://www.firstgiving.com/MonadnockUnitedWay/MUW-GivingTuesday.

Also, be on the lookout for our Plaid Friday—Buy Local, Give Local donation tubes, soon to be located at several retail businesses throughout the region…a great opportunity to unload all your loose change, or small bills, or large bills, all for a great cause!

Special Guest Speaker:
Dick Ober, President and CEO of New Hampshire Charitable Foundation

Dick Ober, President & CEO of NHCF

Dick Ober leads the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, the largest private provider of nonprofit grants and student aid in northern New England. The Foundation manages $600 million in charitable funds donated by hundreds of families and individuals, and awards some 5,000 grants and scholarships exceeding $30 million annually.

Dick has 30 years of experience in nonprofit management and civic affairs. Before coming to the Foundation he held senior staff positions at the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and the Monadnock Conservancy. He has served on numerous nonprofit boards and public commissions, including several Gubernatorial appointments.

Dick has written and lectured widely on community philanthropy, civic life, and the connections between people and the places they live. His work has been published in books, book chapters, magazines, and journals. He has been recognized with awards from the Environmental Protection Agency, the State of New Hampshire, and Plymouth State University, and has repeatedly been named as one of the state’s most influential people by Business New Hampshire magazine.

Dick lives with his wife and daughter in Dublin, New Hampshire.

If you were unable to attend the meeting, you can listen to what Dick had to say here: http://youtu.be/xwxLQxg0c0k.

Highlights from Dick’s Talk:

  • Dick is a “Monadnock guy”—his family has lived in the Monadnock Region since the 1780s!
  • Dick is the 6th President/CEO in the 52 year history of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation (NHCF)
  • NHCF is a 501(c)(3), founded by New Hampshire people for New Hampshire people
  • There are over 85,000 foundations in America, most of which are private foundations
  • NHCF is one of about 800 community foundations; 85% of the US population is served by a community foundation
  • NHCF manages around 1,600 funds for every imaginable purpose, and ranging in size from
    $10,000 to $70 million
  • Each fund has been set up by people who live in, work in, and love New Hampshire
  • Every year NHCF opens 50-60 new funds
  • Every family in the Monadnock Region is served by a nonprofit every day whether they know it or not
  • New Hampshire ranks better than the US average for community engagement, and the Monadnock Region is one of the best regions in the State
  • Challenge for nonprofits: Nonprofits will have to share a greater portion of the common burden for the foreseeable future…trends show that there will be less public money available
  • To meet this challenge, nonprofits will have to rely more on innovation, nimbleness, passion, and rolling up their sleeves to be willing to do more
  • In New Hampshire, the network of nonprofits makes up about 15% of the State’s gross domestic product; this is a significant part of the economy and it is nothing without the power of volunteers!

Join us for our next meeting on Wednesday DECEMBER 3 at 8:00 AM,
