Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!)

YEA!The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own REAL businesses. YEA! was developed at the University of Rochester in 2004 with the support of a grant from the Kauffman Foundation. Keene State College is excited to be introducing YEA! to the Keene Community!

YEA! guides high school students through the process of starting and running a legitimate business or social movement over the course of a full academic year. As of 2014, YEA! has graduated 2,298 students who have started over 1,700 businesses and social movements! YEA! graduates started as students, and left the program as CEOs of their own companies!

Winchester Learning Center Board Receives the Spirit of NH Volunteer Champion Award

On November 10, 2014 The Winchester Learning Center Board of Directors were awarded the Spirit of NH Volunteer Champion Award by Volunteer NH. The Board of Directors was recognized at The Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord New Hampshire. Their dedication and hard work completing a seven year capital campaign culminated with the purchase and renovation of a new childcare facility at 109 Keene Road in Winchester.

Board members recognized were Harold Bigelow, Board President, John Smith, Vice President, Richard Skeels, Treasurer, Ann Goodrich-Bazan, Secretary, Sandy Allen, Roberta Fraser, Theodore Whippie, and Luther Durgin.

The Winchester Learning Center is a Monadnock United Way Agency.

SCS Energy Services

SCS Energy Services is scheduling appointments for Fuel Assistance, Electric Assistance, and Neighbor Helping Neighbor. Please contact the Keene office at 352-7512 or the Claremont office at 542-9528 to schedule an appointment. A checklist of items to bring to the appointment will be mailed following the phone call.

If you work with individuals who might benefit from our services, feel free to follow up with them to see if they have applied yet for this program year. Caseworkers and/or family members can attend appointments on someone’s behalf if they are unable to. We just need a signed statement from the applicant giving permission for them to do so.

Hundred Nights Holiday Auction

Join Hundred Nights on Saturday, December 13, 2014 for a combination live and silent Holiday auction! The auction is being held at the Hellenic Hall at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on West Street, in Keene. A preview of available items and registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. Live bidding will begin at noon!

A list of all available auction items can be seen on the Hundred Nights website www.hundrednightsinc.org. If you see an item that you would like to bid on silently before December 12th please send an email to [email protected] with your name, contact info, description of item and bid amount. The first bid received that is at or above face value will win the auction silently, and that item will not go up for bid at the live auction. Any item that is not won silently will be open to silent bidding during the preview, starting with the highest online bid. If the silent bidding reaches face value or above the item will not go live. Any items not won during the silent auction will go to the live auction, starting at noon, and bidding will begin where the silent auction left off.

Auctioneer John Pappas from Knotty Pine Auction Services in Swanzey will preside over the live portion of the event! Refreshments will be available during the event!

Volunteers will be needed that day to help sell food, run auction items up to the auctioneer and then to the winning bidder, tally bid sheets and clean up after the event. Please call Mindy at 352-5197 if you are able to help in any way!!! Your help would be most appreciated!!!

It’s Your Money… Be Savvy

Keene Senior Center and The Community Kitchen are presenting a series of workshops to assist folks over 50 to become even smarter about managing money. This effort is learn tips to be savvier about the dollar. We know that most people over 50 know how to manage their money, but often there is just enough for extras. These workshops are about making sure that we are as savvy, as we can be, about our money.

All workshops will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (or 7:30) at the Keene Senior Center, a light supper will be served, and for perfect attendance at all 6 workshops participants will be awarded a $25 Gift Certificate to Hannaford’s. The workshops are limited to 20 people, to who have low to moderate income, (less than $34,450 for an individual, $45,050 for 2 person family size), and for people who are over 50.

January 12, 2015, Budgeting—What is Need and What is Want. Taught by City of Keene, Human Services, Natalie Darcy, Case Worker, City of Keene. 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

January 26, 2015, Credit Reports—How to build good credit, How to get a credit report (on-line, mail), Why it is important, and What to do about bad credit. Taught by Savings Bank of Walpole, Martha Curtis, Vice President, Retail Administration. 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

February 9, 2015, Plastics—Debit Cards, Credit Cards, BYOL (Be Your Own Lender). Taught by Chrystal Pearson AVP, Business Banking Officer Amy Driscoll, Amy E Driscoll, Senior Personal Banker, both of Citizens Bank. 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

February 23, 2015, Consumer Credit Counseling—Taught by Clete Thomas, Certified Credit Counselor, Community Outreach Coordinator, American Consumer Credit Counseling, free service. Mr. Thomas will talk about the process of cleaning off Credit Card debt. 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

March 9, 2015, What to Do When the House or Apartment is Just Too Much!—This workshop is focused on the housing decision, and it is a panel discussion. Presenters: Mascoma Savings Bank, Annie Bilodeau, Loan Officer Southwestern Services, Keith Thibault, Chief Development Officer, Nancy Thompson, a Real Estate professional and Senior Center Vice President board member, Carol Sorterup, who recently moved from her home to private apartment. 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

March 23, 2015, When There is Just Not Enough Money—This workshop is focusing on services available seniors that help you add money to your pocket. Panel Discussion: Presenters: Service Link-SNAP Program, Jessica Seher, Director; The Community Kitchen, Phoebe Bray, Executive Director; Employment Agency, speaker TBA. 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

This program is possible with a grant from the Monadnock United Way. To satisfy the grant requirements, we will do a short pre- and post- quiz on general fiscal information.

YogaWeekend 2015

Save the Date! All residents of the Monadnock region are invited to attend YogaWeekend, set for Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25. YogaWeekend is an opportunity for those new to yoga, as well as the more experienced student, to try a variety of yoga styles first-hand with classes led by several local instructors. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. each day. Classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the last class will start at 3:00 p.m.

Massage and Reiki will be available throughout each day. Continental breakfast and a light lunch are provided. There will be a raffle for a stay at the famed Kripalu in Stockbridge, MA and a silent auction with many items donated from area businesses and individuals.

All classes, massage, Reiki, and breakfast and lunch are by donation, with proceeds benefiting Hospice at HCS, the local non-profit hospice providing end of life care to people at home, in assisted living facilities and in long term care facilities in southwestern New Hampshire. HCS is a Monadnock United Way agency with offices in Keene, Peterborough and Charlestown.
