CAMPAIGN REPORT MEETING #1 | OCTOBER 1, 2014

$634,644 — 30% of Goal!

“People are waiting to be asked.”

John Round speaks to Campaign volunteers at the first Report MeetingGeneral Campaign Chair, John Round welcomed everyone to this year’s first Report Meeting at the Colony Mill. John highlighted the fact that the Pacesetter companies, Leadership Giver results, and the Campaign Kickoff events in Keene and Peterborough have produced a lot of early energy, now it is up to everyone to maintain that energy moving forward.

John introduced the Division Chairs who were in attendance, including: Michelle Hayward, Keith Thibault, Peter Hansel, Sharon Greatbatch, and Bill Goodwin. Also introduced were Team Captains Eileen Sarson and Lynne Keating, as well as Barbara Hamel who is working with the LEs as part of her capstone project at Keene State College, and MUW Board Chair, Joe Parisi. Seven of the LEs attended their first Report Meeting, including: Linda Haas, Dan Jean, Ellie Marshall, Sondra Miller, Jessica O'Brien, Sarah Raffelt, and Marilyn Shriver.

Division Chairs provided their status reports, followed by John announcing the amount raised so far is $634,644 or 30% of the $2,106,234 goal!

John stressed that this year is a building/rebuilding year. Significant changes are happening throughout the community and donor landscape, and we need to be prepared to make adjustments to keep up with those changes. He reminded everyone that this year’s goal is lower than last year’s goal, but it is 5% more than what was raised last year! John is confident that “we can do better, all of us.”

Speaking to the volunteers, John said “We need you to come and tell us what you need, what are your challenges, how can we help you. If we all work together, we can reach our goal.”

PARTNER AGENCY SPOTLIGHT: Big Brothers Big Sisters

Phil Hueber, Executive Director from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western New Hampshire (BBBS) was introduced by John and invited to tell everyone a little bit about his agency.

United Way funding is a significant portion of the BBBS budget. Without this funding, it wouldn’t be possible to help the 350+ kids they serve transition from despair to hope every year.

Phil HueberPhil told the story of Little Brother Noah and how his Big Brother Tim have helped each other. Noah is from a single parent home, at the time, he wasn't dressing well, wasn't functioning well at school, mildly autistic, and didn't have any friends. However, a teacher saw the potential in Noah and thought BBBS would be a good fit. Noah was matched with Tim. Tim was able to help Noah come out of his shell. He motivated Noah to do better at school. Now, Noah dresses better, he functions better at school, and he has friends. Noah’s mother said “Tim is by far the best thing that happened to Noah.”

Tim was concerned that he may not be able to be the best mentor and role model he could be, so he decided to improve his health — in a year and a half, Tim lost over 100 pounds proving that the BBBS program is a two-way street. In this case, one child, one volunteer, and two improved lives!

PACESETTER STORY: Southwestern Community Services

Laurie and Paula from SCSLaurie Meissner and Paula McQuillan from perennial Pacesetter, Southwestern Community Services (SCS) provided some insight behind there successful campaign (up 5% from last year). According to Laurie and Paula, the secret to a successful campaign at SCS is FOOD and FUN!

The SCS campaign kickoff is a no-pressure ice cream social, they invite employees to come and make their own ice cream sundae, and by the way, don’t forget to bring your pledge form!

In the hallway just outside the elevator, they have a “Wonder Wall” of stars representing each of the agencies funded by MUW to show where their donations are going. They also held a very successful BBQ, asking for a $5 donation. And thanks to the Monadnock Food Co-op, they had an extra grill!

Thanks to teamwork, getting their younger employees involved, and making it fun and easy, SCS had a successful campaign.
