Ask The Pharmacist

Question:
What are the different available forms of naloxone, and how do they compare?
Answer:
Naloxone is available for take-home use as an intramuscular injection or an intranasal spray. The prescription product EvzioŽ is sold in a package with two, single-dose, pre-filled auto-injectors containing naloxone for injection into the thigh muscle. The Average Wholesale Price (AWP) for the package is $4,500, and includes a trainer injector as well as voice-led directions for administration. More recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the prescription product NarcanŽ (naloxone) Nasal Spray for administration into the person's nostril upon recognizing the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose. Each package contains two, single-dose, pre-filled intranasal spray bottles, and the AWP is $150 per package.
