Question:

First Script sent me a notification, and a letter was also sent to one of my claimant's physicians about the appropriate use of opioids. I notice that the injured worker received information on effectively taking medications and the concerns about prolonged narcotic
usage. Shouldn't the prescribing doctor know all this information and tell the injured worker the risks of using narcotics?

Answer:

Several things come into play here. The physician is doing what he/she can to manage patient health and safety. When assessing patient health, mental status, ordering of labs, and other diagnostic tests, oftentimes information relayed to the patient is missed. Simultaneously, the injured worker has so many competing thoughts about the injury, potentially missing work, paying bills, obtaining medical coverage for the accident, etc., that he may not have the capacity to absorb the information being shared by the prescriber.
