Question:

I see that President Obama signed a bill that regulates compounding pharmacies. What impact does that have on workers' comp?

Answer:
The origin of the bill, the Drug Quality and Security Act1, was the result of the very unfortunate events of last year when New England Compounding Center (NECC) shipped contaminated steroid injections that caused many patient fatalities. While topical compounded medications-typically created at your local pharmacy-should be created in a clean environment using precise standards of practice, sterility (the absence of contamination) is not too important. Sterility for injectable compounds, however, including the steroids manufactured by NECC, is critical. The tragedy resulting from such poor manufacturing spurred the creation of legislation to bring compounding under federal control.
