Coventry Workers' Comp Services ("Coventry") announced today plans to launch a pilot program for the Official Disability Guidelines (ODG) mobile application recently made available by the Work Loss Data Institute (WLDI). The pilot program will be available to a targeted group of providers in the Coventry Integrated Network®, providing them with access to a mobile web application for the ODG, WLDI's evidence-based medical treatment, utilization review, and disability duration guidelines.
The ODG mobile web application offers touchscreen interface access to the ODG treatment and return-to-work guidelines for over 2,200 procedures & drug therapies and all 10,000 diagnoses, covering 99% of treatment requests seen in workers' compensation. Additional functionality includes secure email capability to capture and deliver the ODG guidelines to third parties for the purpose of securing or administering authorization for care.
"We are delighted to be the first workers' compensation network to launch this program," stated Bruce Singleton, vice president, network strategy at Coventry. "Due to the surge in availability and use of handheld devices, offering the ODG mobile application offers a convenient tool for our providers to help facilitate quality care and improve outcomes."
The objective of ODG Mobile is to connect the payor and provider and ensure further penetration of evidence-based medicine in workers' comp, not just on the back-end through utilization review, but on the front-end while providers are making decisions to test, treat, scan, image, operate, medicate, or manipulate.
"Putting evidence-based medicine in the hands of treating providers is a simple concept ̶ the very objective of states when adopting ODG ̶ but until now it's more likely the guidelines have been used on the backend through utilization review (UR). We're very excited to work with Coventry, the nation's largest workers' comp provider network, to implement evidence-based treatment guidelines at the point of care, ensuring injured workers receive early access to quality care, limiting inappropriate utilization, and eliminating costly disputes." stated Phil Denniston, president and chief executive officer of the Work Loss Data Institute.
