Kids Tri 4 Kids
It's Race Weekend!

The 6th annual Kids Tri 4 Kids, presented by ScotiaMcLeod is a few days away!

Please review the instructions in this newsletter carefully to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone.  If you have questions, ask now and be sure to attend one of the orientation sessions when you pick up your race kit on Saturday, May 28th.  Take some time to review the Safety Rules and Procedures and the Race Day Checklist before this weekend.

Online registration will close today -  Monday, May 23rd at midnight. In person registration will be accepted while space permits at race kit pick up on Saturday, May 28th (cash or cheque only please).

On race day we ask that every athlete gets cheered on while they are swimming, biking and running. Call out their names! Stick around to cheer on the older athletes.

Please be sure to thank a volunteer (or two) before you leave. Their time and effort make for a safe and enjoyable race for your children. We couldn't put on the race without their help.

Race Kit Pick Up &
Orientation Sessions

Race Kit Pick Up Date: Saturday, May 28, 2016

Time:  10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location:  Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre 656 Elizabeth Street, London.

Race kit pick up takes place in the gymnasium.
Driving directions can be found on this link.  There is plenty of parking at the community centre.

Orientation Sessions:
10:30 am and 11:30 am
Orientation sessions are about 45 minutes and cover important information about race day including parking, race attire, setting up in transition, counting loops etc. Please plan to attend one session with your child. Choose the one that is convenient for you.

Here's why race kit pick up and orientation sessions are important:
  • Participants and parents become familiar with the race site, our volunteers and race day logistics.
  • You receive your child's official race start time and wave #.
  • Course maps will be on display.
  • A list of participants in each wave will be posted.
  • The orientation sessions cover course information and how to prepare for race day.
  • Questions from participants and parents are encouraged.
  • You don't want to miss the Jack Astors BBQfree to registered participants.

Race Kit Pick Up Process:

STEP 1Lines are alphabetical by LAST name. To check in, give your name and you will receive your race bib.  On the BACK of the race bib your child's WAVE # and start time is printed.
STEP 2 -  Pick up a fantastic race kit.
STEP 3Pick up your child's t-shirt.

Have you checked your child's bike?
We see many bikes that are not in safe working order. Loose handlebars, minimal tire pressure, no working gears and brakes not functioning....these create dangerous situations for your children and put others at risk.  Spending a bit of time to check out their bikes will ensure a safe race.  PLEASE INSPECT YOUR CHILD'S BIKE AND HELMET BEFORE THE RACE.

RACE DAY

Race Day:Sunday, May 29, 2016
Location: Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre, 656 Elizabeth Street, London

Parking:  There will be NO PARKING at Carling Heights on race day.  Elizabeth Street at McMahen Street will be CLOSED to all traffic. Please park in the south west corner Real Canadian Superstore parking lot, 825 Oxford Street E.  Look for the path where volunteers and signs will lead you to the race site.

Arrival Times:

3 to 5 year old age group:
All athletes must arrive and be set up with their bikes and gear in transition, located on basketball court, NO LATER THAN 8:00am. This transition area will close at 8:00am.

6 years and older age groups:
All athletes must arrive and be set up with their bikes and gear in transition NO LATER THAN 8:30 am regardless of your start time. This transition area will close at 8:30am and everyone will be asked to leave so that we can start safely and on time.

Race kit pick up for those unable to pick up on Saturday will be in a red tent in front of the public garden, near the transition zone. Kit pick up on race day begins at 7:00 am.

Athletes should arrive in their swimsuits ready to race.  There is no 'in and out' of transition to drop off gear you have taken to the pool - bring a second set of shoes and clothing if necessary.  Place bikes, helmets, running shoes, water bottle and towel in the designated area of transition by 8:30 am. Volunteers will assist. Bike racks will be labeled by age group.

Arrive at the wave calling tent located at the main doors of the community centre 20 minutes before your child's wave start time (see back of the race bib). Look for the yellow tent. Waves will be called in order and each wave will be brought onto the pool deck by a volunteer. Parents will be directed to the viewing gallery upstairs and not permitted on deck unless you are accompanying an athlete in the 3 to 5 age group.

Life jackets will be available on deck for those participants who desire one. Life jackets are the only permitted flotation device. Water wings are not permitted at Carling Heights.

Athletes in the 3 to 5 age group must be accompanied by one parent in the pool (shallow end).  Even if your child can swim unassisted you must be within arm's length of him/her in the water. Come prepared to get in the pool with your 3 to 5 year old.

Once the race begins only athletes and volunteers are permitted in the transition area.

Older age groups will do multiple loops of the bike course. The counting of loops on the bike course is the responsibility of athletes and parents. Bring the 'loop' chart that you will receive at race kit pick up and make sure you and your child know how many loops of the bike course they need to complete.

Athletes must follow the direction given by the volunteers in red t-shirts.  Failure to follow the directions of the race officials, the use of profanity (athletes and parents) and putting the safety of other athletes at risk will not be tolerated.

Spectators: We ask that you be respectful of all athletes when crossing the race course. This is for the safety of all of our athletes. Crossing the race course without regard of your surroundings puts everyone at risk of being injured. Only athletes in the 3 to 5 age group are permitted to have one parent accompany them on the course.

Post race snacks and refreshments will be available for the athletes only.

Rain or shine! We have ordered good weather however, if it does rain the race will go on! Lightening will delay or suspend the race.
