TRi KiDS Fergus
Pre Race Newsletter

TRi KiDS Fergus is this weekend!

Review the instructions in this email carefully to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone.  If you have questions, ask now, and be sure to attend one of the orientation sessions when you pick up your race kit on Saturday, August 16th.

Please take some time to review the Rules For Safety, FAQ page, Pre Race Video and Race Day Checklist with your athletes before the weekend. We encourage parents to check the Confirmation List to ensure your child is registered for TRi KiDS Fergus.  The race is sold out and we will not be accepting new registrations or wave changes. The transfer deadline has passed and notifying us of withdrawals is not necessary.

We look forward to race weekend and cheering on all athletes while they swim, bike and run!

Race Kit Pick Up & Orientation Sessions

Date: Saturday, August 16, 2014

Location:  Centre Wellington Sportsplex, Community Hall, 550 Belsyde Ave., Fergus. Driving directions to Centre Wellington can be found on this link.

Time:  10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Orientation Sessions: Orientation sessions are about 45 minutes and cover important information about race day including race preparation, parking, setting up in transition, counting loops etc. Please plan to attend a session of your choice with your child.

Orientation Times:

10:30 am and 11:30 am

Parking:  There is parking at the Sportsplex for race kit pick up.

Race kit pick up is an important part of the race, here's why:

  • Athletes and parents become familiar with the race site, our volunteers and race day logistics.
  • Course maps will be on display.
  • A list of athletes in each wave will be posted.
  • The orientation sessions cover course information, advice on setting up in transition and how to prepare for race day.
  • Questions from athletes and parents are encouraged.
  • Athletes get a feel for the energy, they get their race shirt, bib number and they have an opportunity to get body marked...the excitement starts at kit pick up!

Race Kit Pick Up Procedure:

STEP 1 CHECK IN AND BIBS -  Lines are alphabetical by LAST name.

STEP 2 BODY MARKING -  Not mandatory, but encouraged and fun.

STEP 3 RACE KITS - You will receive your race bag.

STEP 4 T-SHIRTS -  Your shirt is based on the size that was selected at registration.

Be sure to...

  1. Attend an orientation session.
  2. Take time to view the course map that will be on display.
  3. Ask questions.
  4. Check the back of your bib for important information.
  5. Hand in your donations and pledge sheets for POGO and Autism Speaks Canada.

Bike and Helmet Safety

Be sure to check your child's bike and helmet before race day. Loose handlebar bolts, zero tire pressure and brakes not functioning....these create dangerous situations for your children and put others at risk. Spending a bit of time to check out their bikes and helmets will ensure a safe race. Bike inspection is not mandatory.

Click here for a great article on how to check helmets for proper fit.

In transition - bike racks will be labelled by age group and bib colour. Place bike on the appropriate rack with helmet, running shoes, shirt with bib pinned on the front and towel under your bike. Volunteers will assist.

Arrive at the YELLOW SWiM flag in swimsuits 20 minutes before your wave start time. Refer to the back of your bib. Listen for your wave to be called.

Life jackets will be available on deck for those athletes who would like one. Timing chips will be handed out on the pool deck. Life jackets and water wings (water wings for 3-5 age group ONLY) are the only permitted flotation devices.

3 to 5 Year Old Age Group:
Athletes in the 3-5 age group MUST be accompanied by one parent in the pool. Even if your child can swim unassisted you must be within arm's length of him/her. Come prepared to get in the pool if you have an athlete in this age group. One parent will assist athletes in the 3-5 age group throughout their race.

Athletes in 6-7 Age Group and Older:
During the race there is no parental assistance for athletes in the 6-7 and older age groups. Parents are not permitted in transition, volunteers will assist all athletes. Parents are permitted to help set up the athlete's gear upon arrival.

The counting of lengths in the pool, loops on the bike and laps on the run courses is the responsibility of athletes and parents. Bring the loop and distance chart that you will receive at race kit pick up.

Please remember athletes will not be permitted to ride their bikes or run unless their torsos (upper body) are covered and they are wearing proper footwear. A shirt is required or one piece bathing suit or triathlon suit. No sandals, Crocs or flip flops while riding their bikes.

Athletes must follow the direction given by the volunteers in yellow t-shirts/vests. Failure to follow the directions of the race officials, the use of profanity (athletes and parents) and putting the safety of other athletes at risk will not be tolerated.

Post race snacks (fruit, juice, SunRype snacks and cookies) are available for athletes only. Moms and Dads please bring a snack for yourselves and for children not participating.

If you plan to leave while the race is in progress you will be asked to wait and follow the direction of crew/volunteers before entering the transition area. Lost and found items will be left at the venue. The organizers are not responsible for lost gear.

Spectators: We ask that you be respectful of all athletes participating and be extremely careful when crossing the bike course.  This is for the safety of all of our athletes. Crossing the race course puts the athletes at risk of being injured.
