TRi KiDS Calgary
Pre Race Newsletter

TRi KiDS Calgary is this weekend! This is our first TRi KiDS race in Alberta and we look forward to a fun race weekend.

Review the instructions in this email carefully to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone.  If you have questions, ask now, and be sure to attend one of the orientation sessions when you pick up your race kit on Saturday, July 26th. We guarantee you will learn something to help make race day a success.

Please take some time to review the Rules For Safety, FAQ pageRace Day Checklist and Pre Race Video with your athletes before the weekend.

On race day we ask that every athlete is cheered on while they are swimming, biking and running. Call out their names! Make them feel extra special! Stick around to cheer on the older athletes.

TRi KiDS Calgary is SOLD OUT.  There will be no in person registration.

We look forward to race weekend!

Race Kit Pick Up & Orientation Sessions

Date: Saturday, July 26th, 2014

Location:  Glenmore Aquatic Complex, 5300 19th St SW, Calgary. Directions can be found here.

Time:  10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Orientation Sessions: Orientation sessions are about 45 minutes and cover important information about race day including race preparation, parking, setting up in transition, counting loops etc. Please plan to attend a session of your choice with your child.

Orientation Times:10:30 am and 12:00 pm

Parking:  There is parking at the Glenmore Aquatic Centre for race kit pick up.

Race kit pick up is busy, especially around an orientation session. Here's why race kit pick up is important:

  • Athletes and parents become familiar with the race site, our volunteers and race day logistics.
  • Course maps will be on display.
  • A list of athletes in each wave will be posted.
  • The orientation sessions cover course information, advice on setting up in transition and how to prepare for race day.
  • Questions from athletes and parents are encouraged.
  • Athletes get a feel for the energy, they get their race shirt, bib number and they have an opportunity to get body marked...the race starts at kit pick up!

Race Kit Pick Up Procedure:

STEP 1 CHECK IN AND BIBS -  Lines are alphabetical by LAST name.

STEP 2 BODY MARKING -  Not mandatory, but encouraged and fun.

STEP 3 RACE KITS - You will receive your race kit and goodies.

STEP 4 T-SHIRTS -  Your shirt is based on the size that was selected at registration.

Be sure to...

  1. Attend an orientation session.
  2. Take time to view the course map that will be on display.
  3. Ask questions.
  4. Check the back of your bib for important information.
  5. Hand in your donations and pledge sheets for Autism Speaks Canada.
Pedalheads

REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR HELMET TO RACE KIT PICK UP
Look for Pedalheads at race kit pick up and on race day.  Pedalheads staff will be checking out helmets to ensure proper fit, handing out bike safety worksheets and going over the 4 S's of bike helmet safety.   Your child must have a helmet to participate...make sure it fits!  Visit the Pedalheads tent at race kit pick up.

Bike and Helmet Safety:

Be sure to check your child's bike and helmet BEFORE race day. Loose handlebar bolts, low tire pressure and brakes not functioning....these create dangerous situations for your children and put others at risk. Spending a bit of time to check out their bikes and helmets will ensure a safe race.  Bike inspection is not mandatory.

Race Day Kit Pick Up:
For those unable to pick up race kits on Saturday, race day kit pick up opens at 8:00 am and will be in a red tent near transition. No registrations or wave changes will be accepted on race day.

Athletes should arrive in their swimsuits ready to race. Bike racks will be labelled by age group. Place bike, helmet, running shoes, water bottle and towel in the designated area of transition. Volunteers will assist.

Arrive at the YELLOW SWiM flag 20 minutes before your wave start time. The flag will be located near the front doors of the centre. Refer to the back of your bib.

Life jackets will be available on deck for those athletes who would like one. Timing chips will be handed out on the pool deck.

Life jackets are the only permitted swim aids, except for the 3 to 5 age group where water wings are permitted.

Athletes in the 3 to 5 age group MUST be accompanied by one parent in the water.  Even if your child can swim unassisted you must be within arm's length of him/her in the pool. Come prepared to get in the pool with your 3 to 5 year old.

The counting of loops on the bike course is the responsibility of athletes and parents. Bring the loop and distance chart that you will receive at race kit pick up.

Athletes must follow the direction given by the volunteers in yellow t-shirts/vests.  Failure to follow the directions of the race officials, the use of profanity (athletes and parents) and putting the safety of other athletes at risk will not be tolerated.

If you plan to leave while the race is in progress you will be asked to wait until the athletes have cleared transition before you can enter the area to collect your gear.

Equipment Restrictions: As per Triathlon Canada the following restrictions and guidelines apply at all TRi KiDS races:

  • Torsos MUST be covered for the bike and run portion of the race. This rule is for both girls and boys. You will be asked to return to transition to put on a shirt. Sleeveless shirts and one piece bathing suits are permitted.
  • Clipless pedals are permitted at any age, with the following conditions: for ages 13 and under, the cleat must be recessed into the cycling shoe, such that the sole of the shoe, not the cleat, makes full contact with the ground. The athlete must be able to clip into both sides of the pedal. For ages 14 and up, all clipless pedal systems are permitted.
  • Cage pedals are NOT permitted at any age.
  • Aerobars are permitted for the 14-15 age group only and must not extend more than 15cm beyond the front wheel axle, and they must not be longer than the brake levers foremost line.

Spectators: We ask that you be respectful of all athletes participating and be extremely careful when crossing the race course.

Post race snacks (fruit, juice, cookies and SunRype snacks) are available for the athletes only.  Moms and Dads please bring a snack for yourself and for children not participating.
