Pre Race Newsletter

TRi KiDS Burlington, the first Ontario race of the 2014 TRi KiDS season, is this weekend!

Review the instructions in this email carefully to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone.  If you have questions, ask now, and be sure to attend one of the orientation sessions when you pick up your race kit on Saturday, June 21st. We guarantee you will learn something to help make race day a success.

Please take some time to review the Rules For Safety, FAQ pagePre Race Video and Race Day Checklist with your athletes before the weekend.

We encourage parents to check the Confirmation List to ensure your child is registered for TRi KiDS Burlington.  The race sold out in March and we will not be accepting new registrations or wave changes. Notifying us of withdrawals is not necessary.

We look forward to race weekend and cheering on all 800 athletes while they swim, bike and run!

Race Kit Pick Up & Orientation Sessions

Date: Saturday, June 21, 2014

Location:  Nelson Pool, 4235 New Street, Burlington. Driving directions can be found on this link.

Time:  10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Orientation Sessions: Orientation sessions are about 45 minutes and cover important information about race day including race preparation, parking, setting up in transition, counting loops etc. Please plan to attend a session of your choice with your child.

Orientation Times:

10:30 am, 11:30 am and 12:30 pm

Parking:  There is parking at Nelson Pool for race kit pick up.

Race kit pick up is BUSY and the busiest time is around an orientation session.  This is the time to ask last minute questions! Here's why race kit pick up is important:

  • Athletes and parents become familiar with the race site, our volunteers and race day logistics.
  • Course maps will be on display.
  • A list of athletes in each wave will be posted.
  • The orientation sessions cover course information, advice on setting up in transition and how to prepare for race day.
  • Questions from athletes and parents are encouraged.
  • Athletes get a feel for the energy, they get their race shirt, bib number and they have an opportunity to get body marked...the race starts at kit pick-up!
  • Helmets can be checked for correct fitting with Pedalheads.

Race Kit Pick Up Procedure:

STEP 1 CHECK IN AND BIBS -  Lines are alphabetical by LAST name.

STEP 2 BODY MARKING -  Not mandatory, but encouraged and fun.

STEP 3 RACE KITS - You will receive your race bag.

STEP 4 T-SHIRTS -  Your shirt is based on the size that was selected at registration.

Be sure to...

  1. Attend an orientation session.
  2. Take time to view the course map that will be on display.
  3. Ask questions.
  4. Check the back of your bib for important information.
  5. Hand in your donations and pledge sheets for POGO and Autism Speaks Canada.
  6. Have your child's helmet checked at the Pedalheads booth.

Bike and Helmet Safety

Be sure to check your child's bike and helmet before race day. Loose handlebar bolts, zero tire pressure and brakes not functioning....these create dangerous situations for your children and put others at risk. Spending a bit of time to check out their bikes and helmets will ensure a safe race.

Look for Pedalheads at race kit pick up and on race day.  Pedalheads staff will be checking out helmets to ensure proper fit, handing out bike safety worksheets and going over the 4 S's of bike helmet safety.   Your child must have a helmet to participate...make sure it fits!  Visit the Pedalheads tent.

Transition areas for each age group will close at the times listed above. These set up times are regardless of your athlete's start time and will be enforced in order to maintain a safe transition zone. Arrive early and set up quickly.

Race day kit pick up for those unable to pick up on Saturday opens at 7:00 am and will be in the red tent near transition. No registrations or wave changes will be accepted.

Athletes should arrive in their swimsuits ready to race. Bike racks will be labelled by age group. Place bike, helmet, running shoes, water bottle and towel in the designated area of transition. Volunteers will assist.

Arrive at the YELLOW SWiM flag and tent 20 minutes before your wave start time. Refer to the back of your bib.

Life jackets will be available on deck for those athletes who would like one. Timing chips will be handed out on the pool deck.

Life jackets and water wings are the only permitted flotation devices.

Athletes in the 3-5 age group MUST be accompanied by one parent in the water.  Even if your child can swim unassisted you must be within arm's length of him/her in the pool. Come prepared to get in the pool with your 3-5 year old.

The counting of laps in the pool and loops on the bike course and is the responsibility of athletes and parents. Bring the loop and distance chart that you will receive at race kit pick up.

Athletes must follow the direction given by the volunteers in yellow t-shirts/vests.  Failure to follow the directions of the race officials, the use of profanity (athletes and parents) and putting the safety of other athletes at risk will not be tolerated.

If you plan to leave while the race is in progress you will be asked to wait until the athletes have cleared transition before you can enter the area to collect your gear.

Spectators: We ask that you be respectful of all athletes participating and be extremely careful when crossing the race course.  This is for the safety of all of our athletes. Crossing the race course puts the athletes at risk of being injured. Only athletes in the 3-5 age group are permitted to have one parent accompany them on the course.

Post race snacks (fruit, juice, cookies and SunRype snacks) are available for the athletes only.  Moms and Dads please bring a snack for yourself and for children not participating.
