With the election only days away, the National Corn Growers Association, a nonpartisan grassroots organization representing the interests of U.S. corn farmers, reminds the agricultural and rural communities that responses submitted by presidential candidates Pres. Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney to a questionnaire on important issues facing rural communities and America's farmers are now available. The information provided by both candidates is meant to help interested voters gain information on the issues that impact agriculture and rural America.

USDA Offers Assistance in Sandy's Aftermath

 

As the East Coast continues cleanup efforts from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced mobilized assistance.  In addition, the USDA urges farmers to record losses from the historic storm.

 

"Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to those affected by Hurricane Sandy earlier this week," National Corn Growers Association President Pam Johnson said. "The past year has been a difficult one for farmers, and we are pleased to see continued support by the USDA.  While we realize many farmers have finished harvesting corn on the East Coast, the assistance provided by the USDA goes far beyond those with crops.  We hope everyone in need finds some relief." Bipartisan Lock and Dam Legislation Announced

 

Plans to file bipartisan legislation to modernize the nation's ports, locks and dams have been announced by Senators Lamar Alexander (D-Tenn.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).  The American Waterways Act would reform the system that builds and maintains the infrastructure. The National Corn Growers Association is pleased that Senators Alexander and Graham have recognized the importance of the lock and dam systems to the American economy.

Panama FTA Implemented this Week

 

NCGA applauds the Panama Free Trade Agreement going into effect earlier this week.  NCGA testified before the Senate Finance Committee on the importance of the FTA to America's farmers in May 2011 and remains committed to the development and maintenance of fair and open global trade policies. Congress passed the Panama FTA last October.

Increasing Corn Rootworm Knowledge

 

NCGA Past President Leon Corzine and Director of Research and Development Dr. Rick Vierling have been appointed to the Corn Rootworm Knowledge Research Program Advisory Committee.  This program, designed by Monsanto, develops collaborative projects with researchers who have expertise in areas that will enhance the understanding of corn rootworm, leading to real world solutions for farmers.
