Greetings!

This issue is about keeping the calm, something expectant and new parents don't get enough of.

The birth process often brings thoughts of pain and fear for expectant mothers, but it doesn't have to be that way.  Doula Kelly Maslen offers  tips for mothers-to-be on how to make their labour as calm and pain free as possible.

Once baby arrives, colic can interrupt the calm and keep parents up all night. Read on to get my advice on dealing with colicky babies.

Take care,

Tips for a Calm Birth - By Kelly Maslen, RHN, RNCP

Labour is often looked at from a fearful perspective and many people believe that childbirth cannot be experienced without pain. In many cultures that have not been influenced by beliefs of Western civilization women give birth calmly and with relatively little discomfort. In my experience as a birth doula I have seen incredible calm and pain free births. Mothers can do this, however it is important to educate yourself and learn some very important techniques.  Mother and Baby

1. The Power of the Mind

Positive thought and relaxation can help the body and enhance its ability to birth freely and effectively. When a labouring mother is in a state of relaxation the Uterus is in a state of relaxation and then able to work in harmony with the body. If mothers want to tell you their "negative" birth story please inform them that you would rather only hear positive birth stories because consciously and subconsciously fear can delay, and slow labour.

What to do for a Colicky Baby - By Dr. Maya Pande, Chiropractor

What is colic? Colic is unexplained fussing or/and crying in a healthy baby that lasts for less than 3 hours a day. It usually starts in the early evening and can be worse after feeding. It can start up suddenly during the baby's first month and usually stops by 3 or 4 months.

Although researchers say that the constant crying has little to no long term effects on the babies, you do want to watch out for certain red flags. If you notice any of these with the colicky crying, contact your health professional:

Vomiting
Change in stool
Lethargy
Bulging soft spots
Poor weight gain (i.e. less than 15 grams a day)

Goodbye to Lesley and Welcome Robyn!

We are sad to see our RMT, Lesley Hargreaves go!  You may remember a seeing a photo of Lesley's beautiful baby girl, Eleanor, in the last newsletter.  Lesley has decided to leave her practice and be a stay at home mom to Eleanor.  Lesley's last day will be November 30th, and is available for appointments until then. We wish Lesley the best of luck and will truly miss her!

On a positive note, we're happy to welcome RMT Robyn Grant-Moran to our practice! Robyn will be joining us in December. Please call us to schedule an appointment with Robyn.

Throughout pregnancy, the birth process, and as new parents it is essential to find ways to relax and immerse yourselves in a calming environment. Even if it is as simple as unwinding by taking a hot bath, make sure to take time to remove yourself from other sources of stress and enjoy a calm moment.  It is difficult for new parents to make time for themselves, but remember to take care of yourself and your health!
