Greetings!

The Immune System is an integral part of our body that can be affected by both internal and external factors.  Being more aware of how your immune system works and what affects it can have a positive impact on your health.

Nutritionist Andria Barrett gives a quick lesson on your immune system and offers advice on how to strengthen it.  Did you know that stress can weaken your immune system?  Psychotherapist, Eva Witkowska explains how to handle stress effectively to avoid weakening your immune system. Read on to find out how you can take care of your health by protecting and strengthening your immune system.

How Strong is Your Immune System? - Andria Barrett, CNP

So what is an immune system? Where is it and is there anything you can to make ours work better?

Your Immune system  Virus

Inside your body there is a well designed protection mechanism called the immune system. This system is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that are constantly trying to invade your body. It is the immune system's job to prevent all attempts at invasion to keep your body strong and healthy.

Where is it?

You may have heard that your immune system is in your gut. In actuality, your immune system is located throughout your entire body. It has to do with our thyroid, adrenal glands and most importantly your white blood cells - which are perhaps the most important aspect for fighting off illness. Your immune system is made up of special cells, proteins, tissues.

Stress Weakens the Immune System -

Eva Witkowska, PhD, Psychotherapist

Screaming Woman

Health research shows that prolonged stress has a detrimental effect on our health. Prolonged stress makes you more susceptible to illness, and once you are sick it will take longer to heal. Stress will make you age faster. Suzanne Segerstrom, PhD, and Gregory Miller, PhD reported findings from 300 empirical studies describing the relationship between psychological stress and the immune system. They found that acute and prolonged stressors weaken the immune system on both the cellular and hormonal level.

There are two components to stress: external and internal stress. External stress can be a complicated situation, conflict at work or with a loved one, sickness in the family, increased responsibilities at work, conflicting schedules. The external stressors cause internal stress, such as stressful thoughts, feelings of worry and anxiety, irritation or bursts of anger. We think faster, our thoughts become more demanding, and we react faster and faster until we experience chronic stress/burnout. As long as we are caught in patterns of 'reactivity' to stressful situations we will strain our bodies and our immune systems.
