Book Club Banter
| "Books let us into their souls and lay open to us the secrets of our own." -William Hazlitt- September brings both the "last gasp" of the Texas hurricane season and lots of "back to school" activities. It is also a great time to learn how to get the best bargains possible with the help of free library programs, like the "Extreme Couponing!" presentation that will take place on September 14 at the Fairmont Branch Library. Also, Harmony Stained Glass Studios will be back at the Central Library on September 4 with the "Making Fused Glass Crosses" program to show you how to make gorgeous gifts at a very reasonable cost. And, of course, the place to go for bargains is the Friends Book Store, where you can enjoy great coffee (still only $.50!) and an even greater selection of gently used books and great gift items. Their cushy club chairs are a great place to relax and collect your thoughts. You'll need the rest because even more exciting things are coming up in October. The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will discuss And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini and will meet on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 (on second Monday due to Labor Day closing) at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Library. Join the group as the follow the life of Dinah, only daughter of Jacob (who had twelve sons), as she receives the great gifts from her father's four wives (her mother and her aunts) that help her through the Biblical tragedies that she had to face in her young life. The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will discuss Quicksand by Iris Johansen and will be meeting in the Board Room of the Central Library on Monday, September 16 at 3:30 p.m. Coffee, tea and autumn treats will be served as the group follows forensic sculptor Eve Duncan as she enlists the clairvoyant Dr. Megan Blair to help her find her missing daughter Bonnie before time runs out. Contact William Simpson (First Monday Book Club) 281-998-1095 X 0 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time Mystery Book Club) 713-475-4984 for more information regarding two excellent book clubs. |

Greetings!
I think we can all agree that a newsletter should contain, well, news! Here is some news. In fact, here is THE BIG NEWS OF THE YEAR! The library MovieBox will be here by mid-September. What is a MovieBox? The MovieBox is similar to a giant RedBox that you see at McDonalds, convenience stores, and gas stations throughout the community. It dispenses movies, making the latest DVD releases available in large numbers to satisfy demand. There is one importance difference though -- the library's MovieBox is free! You only need your library card and PIN to access it. It will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A MovieBox will be located at the front of both the Fairmont branch and the central library. Each Box will circulate up to 4,000 DVDs. How will it work? All you will need is your valid Pasadena Library card and your PIN. If you do not know your PIN, you can ask at the library circulation desk. Follow these easy steps: - Find out what is in the box -- the content is always changing -- and reserve it.
- Log on to the MovieBox from your smart phone, tablet, home computer, library computer, or touch screen selector located outside the library near the MovieBox. You can search by title, genre, actor/director, or description.
- When you find the movie you like and it is in the box, simply reserve it using your library card number and pin. You can select up to three DVD's. Pick them up anytime up to 5 hours.
- Come to the MovieBox dispenser where your reservations are waiting for you:
- Put in your library card, and enter your PIN on the screen and follow the directions.
- Each disk (up to 3) will be delivered to you in a plastic case. A receipt is printed of your transaction. Be sure to take the receipt; it is your reminder of what you have checked out.
- Return your selections to the MovieBox where you got it, by first inserting a library card and then your items one-by-one into the opening on the dispenser.
That's all there is to it! We tried to make the process a simple one, but if you have any questions, we have staff here to help with the process. There is a $1.00 fine per day for each item not returned on time. This is to ensure that everyone will have a great opportunity to see the movies they want, when they want. In addition to the usual movies you found in the past at the library, we will be featuring many new types of films and old classics as well. Most of our newer films will be ordered in Blu-ray as well as DVD formats. If you do not see a movie that you like, please let us know and we will make every effort to find that movie and order it for you. If you have any questions, please ask our friendly staff who will help answer them. For Spanish-speaking patrons, we will have a collection of Spanish language films, and instructions for using the MovieBox will be available in both English and Spanish. Pasadena Public Libraries will be the first libraries in Texas to offer this great service to our community. I'd like to thank our Mayor and our City Council for supporting this effort to bring high quality library services to all the people of our great community. Thomas C. Simiele Director, Pasadena Libraries |

Library Card Sign Up Month September not only marks the return to school for students but is also library card sign-up month. Library cards offer many resources, benefits and programs for students and the general public. Library cards can be an important asset for students because they provide access to research materials and aid in the improvement of reading development. Students have access to various computer programs, databases, study rooms, printing, scanning and copying capabilities. Staff is also available to assist with research and answer general questions. A library card can help your student by being a part of their academic life. The general public can also benefit from signing up for a library card. In addition to providing access to research materials and computers, , the also library provides free movie check-outs. There is a wide selection of different genres for adults and children, so everyone can find a movie that interests them. Computer classes that cover Microsoft programs, resumes, and internet use are also available to the public. All check-out materials and classes are free of charge with your Pasadena Library Card. Signing up for a library card is quick and easy. The two items required in order to obtain a library card are a Texas Driver License or ID and a proof of address. You must be at least 18 years of age to obtain your own card. Minors can get a library card by having a parent or legal guardian sign them up. Learn about all the additional advantages a library card has to offer by visiting your Pasadena Public Library and signing up for a card.
