"I divide all readers into two classes; those who read to remember and those who read to forget!"
-William Lyon Phelps-
The "dog days of August" often bring thoughts of cool Alaskan cruises to richer Texans and longing thoughts of tubing in the cold streams of the Texas Hill Country to those with more modest budgets. You can save even more money by just coming by and enjoying the FREE air-conditioning at both branches of the Pasadena Public Library while you are experiencing the fun of our Youth, Teen, Adult and Senior Summer Reading Clubs with their great prizes. Come learn about the treasures of ancient Egypt and experience the wonders of the Maya in the Houston Museum of Natural Science's giant inflatable Discovery Dome, free of charge (with free refreshments too!) at your Pasadena Library. See what new bargains the Friends of the Library are offering in their newly-restocked Book Store and in their sale cases. You won't find a better deal anywhere, and all proceeds from these sales go right into helping the Library provide all these lovely free programs and to things like the new film projector at the Fairmont Branch Library.
The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will discuss Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan, and will meet on Monday, August 5 at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Library. Come follow the twists as intelligent and beautiful Cambridge student Serena Frome joins MI5 in 1972 England and finds turmoil as she ends up in the "Sweet Tooth" program to covertly influence promising young writer Tom Haley.
The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will discuss Murder In the Marais by Cara Black and will meet in the Board Room of the Central Library at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, August 19. Coffee, tea and cool summer snacks will be served as the group follows Parisian private investigator Aimee Leduc, who takes the results of a secret decoding job to a nice old Jewish lady...only to find her strangled.
Contact William Simpson (First Monday) at the Fairmont Branch Library 281-998-1095 X 0 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time Mystery) 713-475-4984 for more information about these two interesting book clubs.

Greetings!
The summer is drawing to a close. How do I know? Ads for school supplies are starting to show up in the newspapers, the sun is setting just a wee bit earlier, and summer reading is only going to be running for a few more weeks. But there still is time to get into the program and get a few good reads under your belt before the season ends. Please stop by and see some of the many new books that come in every single day, all year-round at the Pasadena Libraries. If you haven't had time for a vacation this summer, a book can take you away to anywhere on earth or beyond. It can take you back in time or into the future and, as long as you have your library card, the cost is totally free. Even better, a trip by way of the library will allow you to bring your whole family along for the same price. Whether it's just to browse while enjoying the air conditioning, watch a family movie with your kids, check your email and favorite websites, or attend a program for adults, children or teens, the library is the place to be during the summer. The library is also a place where you can meet your friends and neighbors for a cup of coffee at the café area, or just sit and chat. Some of the interesting conversations have been going on this summer at the Friends of the Library bookstore. The subjects I have heard there over the last few months have included talk about everything from sports, religion, politics, movies, kids and grandkids and, of course, books. Stop in and see what you can hear. When your library visit is over and you're heading home, take a quick glance outside. If you find yourself checking out while it is raining or if it looks like it is about to rain, ask the circulation staff for a free plastic bag to put your books or other materials in to keep them dry. A little bit of rain can cause a lot of damage to books in this warm and humid climate, but a plastic bag to take them home in will go a long way to help those books stay in good shape. Try to keep the books you borrow dry and clean for the next user to enjoy. As summer winds to an end, change is also coming to the library. We recently unveiled a new catalog, and an exciting new service will be starting in the library in mid-September. Now is a good time to check your library card account and find out what your PIN is. The default PIN is the four-digit number associated with your card. If you do not remember what your PIN is, please check with circulation the next time you are in the library. Requiring a PIN not only enables you to use this new service, but it is also adds more security to your account, by ensuring that only you can use your card. I hope everyone enjoys the last month of summer. I look forward to seeing you in our library. Thomas C. Simiele Director, Pasadena Libraries |

Movie Box For many families, money is tight, especially when it comes to entertainment expenses. The library has an exciting new addition that will help: the Movie Box. This fall, the Pasadena Public Library will become the first library in the state of Texas to install an automated DVD machine. What is Movie Box? If you have used Redbox, the Movie Box will be very familiar. It looks like an ATM but distributes DVDs instead of cash. The Movie Box will hold up to 4,000 DVDs and will be available at both library locations. It will provide access to DVDs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The best part is that it is absolutely free to Pasadena Public Library cardholders. To rent a movie, all you need is a library card! How to use the Movie Box: Step 1: Library Card First, you will need a library card. To get a Pasadena Library card, you will need to present a photo I.D. and proof of address, such as a letter sent to you at your home address. Step 2: Library Website The easiest way to select DVDs is to go to the Pasadena Public Library website and choose DVDs from a link that will be provided. You can use your smart phone, home computer, library computer or the computer located near the Movie Box for access. Simply find something you like and place the DVD on hold. Step 3: Movie Box Once you have reserved your DVDs, you can head to the Movie Box. Simply follow the on-screen instructions. Step 4: Return Return the DVD to the Movie Box from which you borrowed it. FAQ How many movies can I check out? You may check out a total of three (3) discs per card. If you have three items checked out, you will need to return those items before the Movie Box will dispense any new checkouts. How long can I keep the DVDs? Items are loaned for three (3) days. Overdue fines are $1.00 per day. Where do I return the discs? Return DVDs to the library Movie Box where you checked them out. If Movie Box DVDs are returned to the wrong location or are placed in the book drops, you will be responsible for fines ($1.00 per day) accrued during transit. You can only return them to the Movie Box from which you checked them out.
