"'Tell me what you read and I'll tell you who you are'' is true enough, but I'd know you better if you told me what you re-read."

-Francois Mauriac-

July brings plenty of summer heat to Pasadena, as well as great things like barbecues, swimming, beach time, vacations, fireworks, 4th Fest and your wonderfully cool Pasadena Public Library. Come by the library to pick out some sizzling summer reads, like grilling books, hurricane books, hot teen titles, or great new children's books, or to pick from lots of new DVDs. Check out the free programs such as "Party Animals," the all-day "July 3rd Freedom Fest," "Mammal Mania," "Stress, Hormones & Belly Fat," "Master Cartoonist," "Smart Start To Mutual Funds" and the Discovery Dome's "Force 5!" and "Impact Earth!" panoramic films. You'll also want to make sure you're participating in our Children's, Teen or Adult Summer Reading Club programs so that you'll have the chance to win great prizes, including a Kindle Fire and a PlayStation. And don't forget the Friends Bookstore where you can find great (and cheap!) reads for all ages, along with a case full of costume jewelry, special books, lace fans, vintage glassware and other lovely items at great prices. Your Pasadena Public Library is a great place beat the heat, have fun and SAVE MONEY for some of those other expensive summer treats that you are looking forward to enjoying this year!

The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will discuss These Is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 by Nancy Turner and will be meeting on Monday, July 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Branch Library. Join the group as they follow young Sarah Prine as she forges a full and remarkable existence in a harsh, unfamiliar frontier and finds enduring love with Cavalry officer Captain Jack Elliot.

The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will discuss The Bone Vault by Linda Fairstein and will be meeting on Monday, July 15 at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Central Library. Coffee, tea and chilling treats will be served as the group follows the twists as Alex Cooper together with cops Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace try to find out who killed a young museum researcher and shipped her body to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exquisite Temple of Dendur in an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus just in time for an elite gala.

Contact William Simpson (First Monday) at the Fairmont Branch Library 281-998-1095 X 0 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time Mystery) 713-475-4984 for more information about these two very interesting book clubs.

Greetings!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all the people of Pasadena who came out to support the Friends of the Library mammoth book sale. It was great to see so many of you taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity to purchase gently-used books at prices far below any commercial bookstore. And welcome to everyone who joined the Friends of the Library on Friday to get the first chance to buy books and beat the crowds on Saturday. The Friends Book store will be reopened by the time you read this and will be stocked with fresh materials and some new pricing ideas. I hope you have a chance to stop in there frequently, as the stock will be changing more rapidly than before. With the chocolates, coffee, ear buds and various other things on sale every day, not to mention some good conversations on books and the like, it is a great place to breeze through on your next library visit.

For those of you who wonder who the Friends of the Pasadena Library are, they are a wonderful group of ladies and gentlemen who devote some time and perhaps a little bit of money to help support the library and its many programs and extras. They raise money through the bookstore and the annual book sale. This is also the group that staffs the bookstore each week and makes the great coffee that you can smell in every corner of the library. The Friends are fascinating to chat with, so stop in and say "hi" the next time you are in. You can also meet them at the social activities they host a few times a year. In fact, plans are in the works right now for a summer soiree. It's not too late to join in the fun!

Summer reading is now in full force. If you haven't joined yet, there is still time. There is no cost to join. The prizes are wonderful, and there are thousands of new books for you to dig into during these hot summer days. All you have to do is come up to the library and ask any staff member to help you sign up for the summer reading program. In a few minutes, you will be on your way to some great reads and a chance to win some amazing prizes. Adults, teens and children all have their own division of the summer reading program with prizes suitable for all ages.

Although school is out for the summer and the students are all enjoying a well-deserved break from their studies, it will not be long before school bells ring again and school summer reading assignments will have to be turned in. Now is the time to remind the students in your house to crack open their assigned summer reading. And for fun, they can come to get books they like to read at the library, along with DVDs and music CDs.

Some of you have asked me what I am reading for the summer. Currently, I am reading David Sedaris's, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls. This sly selection of various musings by author David Sedaris was suggested to me by a member of the Friends of the Library. I am also reading the dark Milestones, by Sayyid Qutb, one author's view of Islam. If your summer reading seems to be in a rut, you might want to look at a completely off the wall author such as Christopher Moore. He has been turning out wild and crazy books, such as Coyote Blue, Practical Demonkeeping: A Comedy of Horrors, Island Of The Sequined Love Nun, or Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story, among others.

Hopefully you will have all enjoyed a wonderful and safe 4th of July. I look forward to seeing you at the Pasadena Libraries this summer.

Summer Jollifications

July is the time for summer fun and festivities! The City of Pasadena offers many fun activities for the whole family, free of charge. Coming up in the next few weeks, there's a variety of activities, ranging from outdoor family fun and patriotic celebrations to special events that will give you a break from the heat.

First up, the Pasadena Public Library is offering a Freedom Fest program for children on July 3rd. It will include free face painting, crafts, balloons and clowns to entertain. The next day, the patriotic fun continues with the 4th Fest on Thursday July 4th at the Pasadena Convention Center &
Fairgrounds from 4-10 p.m. Celebrate Independence Day with a fireworks show, live music, plenty of shows, a KidZone full of games for the kids, a car show, a BBQ cook-off  and more! Both the Freedom Fest and 4th Fest events are free of charge.

As the weather warms up, the city offers plenty of ways to have fun while cooling off. During the summer, city pools are open to the public six days a week. The cost of admission is $1.50 for city residents or $2.00 for non-residents. If you haven't tried out the three water slides we installed at Strawberry Pool last summer, now is the time! The city also offers splash pads at three locations that are free of charge; they are located at Memorial, Red Bluff and Sunset Park.

There is plenty of entertainment and fun activities for everyone, not just in July, but year-round! Whether you like to barbecue, swim, read or just play outdoors, the city has many resources for you to enjoy. To see a full calendar of events, visit calendar.pasadenatexas.net
