"If you have never said 'Excuse Me' to a parking meter or bashed your shins on a fireplug, you are probably wasting too much valuable reading time!"
-Sherri Chasin Calvo-
June brings summer sun to all and the joy of the Summer Reading Club to all Texas public libraries and librarians. Our two libraries in Pasadena are full of people of all ages-especially young kids and teens who are looking to stay cool and enjoy all the free programs and events this summer. And we're offering a variety of them - everything from the Texas Snake Man to Fruit Ninja Competition to Living Free From Diabetes to Discovery Dome: Force 5! to movies with free popcorn for all ages. It is also the time for the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library's Summer Book Sale, which will take place on Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22. They will be selling vintage costume jewelry, feather and lace fans, vintage glassware and pottery, large framed prints and other things this year. And of course, there will be plenty of books, comic books, VHS & DVD films and audio cassettes for all age levels -- especially LOTS of children's and teen books in very good condition! Put this great Book Sale on your calendar list of things to do and enjoy the very inexpensive (CHEAP!) coffee, lemonade and candies that they will sell there as well, so you will have plenty of money left over for other delights this summer.
The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will be discussing Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, and will be meeting on Monday, JUNE 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Branch Library. Come follow the twists as Nick Dunne and his sister Margo parade an endless series of lies, deceits and "inappropriate behavior" as the police strive to find out what really happened when Nick's beautiful wife Amy suddenly disappeared from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River.
The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will be discussing Play Dead by David Rosenfelt, and will be meeting on Monday, June 3 (THIS MONTH ONLY!) at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Central Library. Coffee, tea and "people treats" will be served as the group follows attorney Andy Carpenter as he successfully appeals a golden retriever's death sentence and pushes the boundaries of the Law even further as he struggles to free an innocent man by convincing an incredulous jury to take this canine's testimony seriously.
Contact William Simpson (First Monday) at the Fairmont Branch Library 281-998-1095 X 0 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time Mystery) 713-475-4984 for more information about these two very interesting book clubs.

Greetings!
It is hard to believe, but summer is here already. The library staff is busy putting together another great summer reading program for adults, teens, and children. The rules are a little different this year, so be sure to read the rules for summer reading when you sign up. The prizes look so great that I wish I could enter the contest myself! In addition to the great summer reading program, there is also a series of interesting activities and programs being presented at the library all summer long. These activities cover all age groups and interests. Please pick up schedules for Adult, Teen and Children's Programs when you visit the library. The other REALLY BIG event coming up in June is the Friends Book Sale. This will take place on June 21st and 22nd. We often see signs promoting this store or that store's half off sale. Would you believe me if I said you could get gently used books for 95% off of retail price? Well, you can at the Friends Book Sale! Friday night from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. is the Friends preview sale. If you are a Friend of the Library, you can get in to buy books and DVDs ahead of the crowd on Saturday. If you're not already a Friend of the Library, membership will be available at the door on Friday for $10. Being part of this organization is not only a great civic thing, but also carries other privileges, such as participation in the social activities of the Friends and gaining more insight into the library. Besides fiction, the Friends Book Sale has many how-to books, as well as books on cooking, gardening, medicine, nature, fishing, sports and pets. Everyone can find a book at the Friends Book Sale. I look forward to meeting you personally there. Stop in and tell me what you think of the library. Thomas C. Simiele Director, Pasadena Libraries

Summer Reading Programs This summer, the Pasadena Public Library is sponsoring programs for children, teens and adults. Weekly prizes will be awarded and the registration process is easy. The Summer Reading program is always one of our favorite events of the year, and we're not alone; Summer Reading programs have been a tradition in the United States for over a hundred years. Linda Eastman created the Cleveland Library League in 1895 in order to "teach and increase care of books, bring new users to the library, and direct children to good books." The league quickly grew to over 12,000 members. As the league continued to develop, Eastman created reading clubs led by adults and older students. The library league idea quickly caught on. Within a year, six other libraries had library leagues. Soon, libraries across the county would recognize the potential of summer reading programs. Today, 95% of all library systems have a summer reading program. While programs vary from library to library, most include programs for readers of all ages. Summer reading is not only fun, but it can also be a smart idea. Recent studies show that students lose two to three months worth of knowledge over the summer because of a lack of intellectual stimulus. Reading can help keep the mind active and the Pasadena Public Library is here to help. It all starts June 10, so visit the nearest library location -- Central or Fairmont -- and start your summer right!
