"The love of learning, the sequestered nooks,

And all the sweet serenity of books."

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow-

February comes bringing thoughts of love, friendship, AARP Free Tax Help and CHOCOLATE. You can get quite a few of these things at your Pasadena Public Library, where the AARP Free Tax Help sessions start on Friday, February 1 and the chocolate is available year round for only $.10 a mini-bar in the Friends Bookstore. The tax help sessions will be available every Thursday 9:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. and every Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (excepting Good Friday) until April 15, so make it a point to take advantage of this excellent FREE service. The love and friendship might be a little harder to find, but they are also here at your Library along with a generous number of new romances and romantic DVDs that can be carried home for your enjoyment. Come on by and check us out-you might just find a sweetheart of a read!

The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will read The Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter, and will meet on Monday, February 4 in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Branch Library at 6:00 p.m. Come along for a ring-side seat in history as the group follows a starstruck young Italian innkeeper, his American starlet long-lost love, the "heroically preserved" producer of the 1962 film "Cleopatra," his idealistic young assistant, the army veteran turned novelist, rakish Richard Burton himself, and a host of husbands, wives, lovers, dreamers, superstars and losers over the next fifty years.

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will read The Monster in the Box by Ruth Rendell, and will meet in the Board Room at the Central Library on Monday, February 18 at 3:30 p.m. Coffee, tea and Valentine treats will be served as the group discusses the twists as Inspector Reggie Wexford tracks down a long-time and apparently motiveless serial killer in the town of Kingsmarkham and runs into a suspected "honor killing" of a young Pakistani girl.

Contact William Simpson (First Monday) @ Fairmont 281-998-1095 X 15 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time Mystery) 713-475-4984 for more information regarding these two entertaining book clubs.

Greetings!

One of the most interesting things about a library is, surprisingly, not just the books. We all expect a library to have lots of good books. We expect magazines and newspapers, and we expect DVDs and CDs and audiobooks on tape and electronic books for our new e-readers like the Kindle, the Nook, the iPad, etc., but what we don't expect to find in our library is dinosaur bones, cannon balls, meteorites, Civil War swords and Faberge eggs. Yet, these are just some of the many wonderful things you might have found in the Pasadena libraries over the last year.

Almost every month throughout the year, fellow members of the community as well as library staff, place some of their treasured collectibles on display at the library for everyone to admire. These items are sometimes reproductions, but most often are the real things. You may have seen similar items in museums, or in historical movies, or read about them in books. Yet here they are up close and beautifully displayed in your library's display cases.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank some of the people who have contributed so generously to making these beautiful displays a reality for our community. Here is a listing of them and some of the displays they helped to create for us all to enjoy.

Paul Schupska-

"NASA Mementos: Celebrating 50 Years Of Space Exploration!"

"Treasured Toys: Antique & Collectible Toys, 1890-Present"

"Oriental Treasures: Fine Porcelain & Glass Vases"

"Baseball Cards & Memorabilia: 1920's To 1940's"

"America In the Olympics"

"Seashells, Sea Creatures & Lighthouses"

"Collectible Toys Soldiers: 1900's To 1960's"

"Memories & Mementos Of World War II"

"Christmas Joy!: Antique & Vintage Toys"

"Easter Egg Treasures: Faberge Egg Replicas"

"Titanic: A Night To Remember Forever"

"Honoring Abraham Lincoln:  Lincoln & Civil War Collectibles"

Connie Smith-"Remembering Lincoln the Man:  Lincoln Documents & Collectibles"

Judy Dean-
"Gobble, Gobble!: Ceramic & Glass Turkey Collectibles"

Alfonso Grimaldo-
"Antique & Collectible Cameras"

Bert Muston- "It's Strawberry Festival Time!"

Nona Phillips- "Beautifying Historic Pasadena: Photos & Mementos"

Lucy Turoff-"In Glory Of the Living Earth:  The American Art Pottery Of Van Briggle"

Ann Cunningham/Barbara Sitzman- "Pasadena Senior Queens"

Marion Moore-"Memories Of 9/11: Original Art Work Commemorating the 9/11 Tragedy"

Please join me in expressing your thanks to these fine people for the work they have done to entertain so many of us in the past, and hopefully in the future, with their fabulous collections. There are many more of these exhibits to come. If you miss a day at the library, you really miss something fascinating, or should I say, out of this world?

While we are expressing our thanks, I want to just take a moment to express my thanks to our public services staff who does such a wonderful job in placing tables out with themed books each month. Some of the theme books match the items on display, as they did recently with the Lincoln displays. As members of the library and residents of Pasadena, your suggestions for themed book displays and ideas for exhibitions in our display cases are always welcome. Talk to any of our public services staff about your ideas.

Looking to the future, I am pleased to announce that we will be acquiring more materials in the Spanish language. The library recognizes the great interest many of our members have in finding materials written in Spanish. We have been focusing our attention at acquiring good print and electronic materials in Spanish, but the sources are much more limited than for English materials and they must often be processed and cataloged individually rather than pre-processed from the seller as are most of our English language materials. Nevertheless, we are making the effort and will see the results within the next few months.

When visiting the Central library last month, we suggested that you READ LIKE THE STARS. Every one of the well-known celebrities displayed in the large photographs around the library consented to having their pictures taken and displayed at the library because they know how important reading is to them. They all are successful in what they do, and part of the reason they are such successes is because they love to read. Reading has played a major part in transforming them into who they are today. They want you to join them in transforming your life through a life-long love of reading. I hope you do. Will you be one of the reading stars of the future? It all starts at the Pasadena Public Libraries.

American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month. To commemorate this initiative, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) introduced the Million Hearts Campaign in 2011. The campaign goal is to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. over the next five years by educating Americans about healthy heart choices and improving the care of people who already need or are in treatment.

The CDC's initiative has been made with numerous private and public sector interest groups, including the American Heart Association, and for good reason. In fact, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., counting for 2,200 deaths per day (the equivalent to one in every three deaths). With this statistic, it is not hard to imagine that nearly every American has had a personal encounter with someone who has suffered from heart disease.

To further the heart healthy initiative, the American Heart Association recommends the following "heart healthy tips": eating heart healthy foods, including fish, fiber, and foods with low cholesterol counts; exercising for a minimum of 30 minutes every day; losing 10 percent of your body weight, if you are overweight; managing stress through positive self-talk and daily relaxation exercises, like yoga or meditation; and quitting smoking.

For more information about way to prevent or cope with heart disease, the Pasadena Public Library has several books about the subject. In addition to informational books, we have a collection of heart healthy cookbooks. Want to know more about stress management exercises like yoga? We also have a DVD collection of yoga techniques. Click here for available titles.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE PASADENA PUBLIC LIBRARY:
I love the fact that this library it's a place where everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender or ethnicity; it's a small world within the world. The fact is, that this library is filled with so many wonderful resources for customers and employees to use at their convenience, what's not to love!  Another reason why I love this library is because it's a place that I've seen grow and who has seen me grow not just on a professional level, but a personal one as well. I also love this library because of the relationships I've built with my fellow co-workers and customers. 2013 Senior Pageant

The Madison Jobe Senior Center invites all female residents of Harris County who are at least 60 years old to take the stage as part of the annual Ms. Pasadena Senior pageant. There is no cost to participate in the pageant, which features contestants facing off in talent, interview, philosophy of life and evening gown competitions.

The woman crowned Ms. Pasadena Senior 2013 will receive a $500 cash prize and an all-expense paid trip to compete in a state level pageant later in the year, among other prizes. She will also represent the center at community programs, social events and special occasions throughout the year.

But pageant director/Madison Jobe Senior Center manager Barbara Sitzman said the rewards extend far beyond trophies.

"The friendships that develop between the contestants are wonderful. Even after the pageant, they keep in touch with each other," Sitzman said. "The pageant provides a forum to honor and recognize women who exemplify the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all Harris County and all of Texas senior women. It's a testimony to the vitality and strength of women in their 'Golden Years,' and it's a great experience for everyone involved."

The annual Ms. Pasadena Senior Pageant is hosted by the City of Pasadena and sponsored by HealthSpring. This year, the pageant will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in the Pasadena Convention Center.
