Welcome to Pasadena Public Library
Greetings!
Just a quick reminder to everyone, the Fairmont Branch Library is now open full time. Its hours are weekdays 10-6 with Monday and Wednesday evenings until 8 pm. Saturday, the library is open from 12 to 5 pm.
I was asked a question last month about our library policy on confidentiality of patron records and freedom of access. I thought I should review that subject to make sure my answer was correct and to share some of that information with you.
The American Library Association, which is the national organization representing libraries and the library profession has policy of preserving the confidentiality of patron's records as well as a patron's privacy and insuring that the library remains an open institution for the free dissemination of information. One of its principal documents is the Library Bill of Rights quoted here:
The American Library Association affirms that all libraries are forums for information and ideas, and that the following basic policies should guide their services.
I. Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.
II. Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.
III. Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.
IV. Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas.
V. A person's right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views.
VI. Libraries that make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to the public they serve should make such facilities available on an equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use.
As a professional librarian and member of the ALA, I subscribe to these policies and ensure that our libraries in Pasadena do as well. In addition to the ALA, the Texas Library Association has also adopted policies which mirror the ALA's positions. The Texas library Association holds:
.... that the freedom to read is a corollary of the constitutional guarantee of freedom of the press. Freedom of choice in selecting materials is a necessary safeguard to the freedom to read, and shall be protected against extra-legal, irresponsible attempts by self-appointed censors to abridge it. The Association believes that citizens shall have the right of free inquiry and the equally important right of forming their own opinions, and that it is of the utmost importance to the continued existence of democracy that freedom of the press in all forms of public communication be defended and preserved. The Texas Library Association subscribes in full to the principles set forth in the LIBRARY BILL OF RIGHTS of the American Library Association, Freedom to Read Statement, and interpretative statements adopted thereto.

In addition to the policy of the Texas Library Association, the State Legislature has also provided by statute that:
The records of library materials you borrow or use, the information you seek in the library, or the library services you use cannot be disclosed to anyone except:
- As reasonably necessary for the operation of the library;
- Persons authorized, in writing, by the individual named in the records; or
- By order or subpoena of a district court, issued on a showing of good cause.
*As of September 1, 1993, the Texas Open Records Act protects the confidentiality of the records of any library system which is supported in whole or in part by public funds, that identify or serve to identify a person who requested, obtained, or used a library material or service. Retrieved 11/19/2012 from http://www.txla.org/IF-confidentiality
The above law adopted by the Texas legislature preserves a patrons privacy in the use of library materials. With the few exceptions mentioned above, or modified by judicial decree, what you borrow, what you read, what you look at on the internet using the resources of the Pasadena Libraries is held in strictest confidentiality. This includes the information on your application for a library card, the books you place on reserve, the web sites you visit using the library internet, and in what part of the library you browsed for books.
If you have any questions about library privacy, or confidentiality, please ask a librarian or ask me. We would be glad to discuss this subject at any time.

Holiday Movies
As the weather chills and stores begin to decorate with garland, many families enjoy a movie night in with their favorite holiday movie classic. At the Pasadena Public Library, we offer many of the popular movie favorites available for free checkout.
For families with young kids, the children's library collection offers several titles that are rated G. Santa Buddies (G), a sequel to the popular family movie Air Bud (PG), features a group of Golden Retriever puppies on their journey to save Christmas. This movie has the feel good family emotions of any holiday film, but stars a talking puppy cast making it fun for younger kids.
The Santa Clause (PG) trilogy, stars Tim Allen as an advertising executive who inadvertently becomes Santa after the original falls off the roof of Allen's house on Christmas Eve. The three movies follow Allen's character through self-discovery as the new Santa, including marrying Mrs. Claus and defeating a jealous Jack Frost.
For parents who want to relive their own childhoods, the library has several classic children's Christmas stories, including A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Disney's A Christmas Carol (PG), and The Muppet's A Christmas Carol (G). In addition to these classics, the library also has The Nightmare before Christmas (PG), which is a more modern Christmas classic about Jack Skeleton, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who sets out to create his own version of Christmas after kidnapping Santa Claus.
If you are looking for live action classics, try The Miracle on 34th Street (PG) about a girl who doesn't believe in Santa Claus, and the man who changes her mind with a miracle at Macy's department store in New York City. The library also has the classics White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life.
If your family enjoys a good laugh, check out National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (PG-13), starring Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, a family man with dreams of creating a memorable family Christmas that weighs heavily on his annual Christmas bonus. The movie is nonstop laughs, and has become a classic in its own right. The film has a little known sequel, which the library also has. Another laugh a minute holiday movie is A Christmas Story (PG), a comedy classic that focuses on one boy's dream gift, a Red Rider BB gun. The only problem is every adult he tells suggests this present will only lead to one outcome: "You'll shoot your eye out, kid." The most modern day Christmas comedy the library has available is Elf (PG), starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, an accidental elf attempting to reconnect with his real family. The movie also stars Zooey Deschanel as a mall elf who befriends Buddy as they work together at Santa's workshop.
If you are more interested in the tear-jerker holiday movies, The Family Stone (PG-13) is a movie about a family struggling with holiday drama brought on by Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays a woman coming home with her boyfriend to meet his family for the first time. Parker creates many complications for the rest of the all-star cast as she tries desperately to gain their approval.
Love Actually (R) is a British dramedy about several central characters as their holiday lives intertwine with one another. The movie is both funny and charming, and shows the good and bad about the holiday season. This movie stars several big names in British acting, including Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, and Emma Thompson. This film is similar to the more recent concept movies Valentine's Day (PG-13) and New Year's Eve (PG-13), but features a lot more nudity and adult themes, which is why it is rated R.
No matter what type of holiday movie your family might prefer, the Pasadena Library has you covered. Come in and check out a new family favorite or click here to view a list of Christmas movies available.

Book Club Banter
"Books serve to show a man that those original thoughts of his aren't very new after all."
-Abraham Lincoln-
December is upon us with all of its mad holiday rush of worshiping, shopping, party-going, gift-giving and marathon eating. While coping with all of these wonderful (and exhausting) activities, make it a point to take a break and stop by your Pasadena Public Library to enjoy our special Abraham Lincoln displays, antique toys display and our many decorated Christmas trees. Don't forget to visit our Friends Book Store, where you can pick up all sorts of gently used books, paperbacks, and DVD and VHS films as well as brand new Christmas key chains and pretty bookmarks and stationary. You can take a break from the holidays while relaxing in our comfortable club chairs and enjoying a hot cup of $.50 coffee or you can come by and check out one of our book clubs-one of which will be serving some really nice holiday treats courtesy of some very generous Tea-Time Mystery Book Club members. If you have time, you can even stop by Pasadena City Hall and see some gorgeous Christmas trees decorated by local non-profit organizations, including our very own Library tree featuring "Clifford & Friends" (just look for that really BIG RED DOG)...
The Fairmont Branch Library's First Monday Book Club will read A Separate Peace by John Knowles, and will meet in the Conference Room at the Fairmont Library on Monday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m.. Come and join the group as it discusses this classic coming-of-age tale set in the summer of 1939 at an exclusive prep school where room-mates Gene and Phineas form a complex bond of friendship that leads to violence, a confession and a betrayal of trust.
The Central Library's Tea-Time Mystery Book Club will read Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny, and will meet in the Board Room at the Central Library on Monday, December 17 at 3:30 p.m. Coffee, tea and wonderful Christmas treats will be served as the group follows Chief Inspector Armand Gamach at Quebec's Winter Carnival as he investigates the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society, where an obsessive historian's quest for the remains of Quebec founder Samuel de Champlain ends in murder.

(First Monday) at the Fairmont Library 281-998-1095 x15 or Lucy Turoff (Tea-Time Mystery) 713-475-4984 for more information regarding these two book clubs.
