ASQLA MEMBER MEETING - February 12, 2014
"Exploring the Link between Quality and Reliability"
Please join the ASQLA Section 0700 for its monthly member meeting on Wednesday, February 12th. The meeting will be at Phenomenex in Torrance.. This meeting is an opportunity to network with other Quality professionals and to learn about current techniques & technologies. Our guest speakers this month is Joe DeSimone speaking on "Exploring the Link between Quality and Reliability."
In this presentation Joe will deep dive into the vital link between Quality and Reliability. Joe will share some of his experiences with products from different industries that illustrate this all important relationship. Quality begins with requirements and the VOC, and gets incorporated into the design phases to a final product to be manufactured. The traditional definition for Quality as "Conformance to Requirements" is an incomplete definition. Often, we look at the two as discrete entities:
Quality is everything until put into operation (0-hours)
Reliability is everything happening after 0-hours
Actually, they are "Siamese twins". Reliability takes into account the specified Quality performance and of a product throughout it intended lifetime. The aspect of Reliability must be addressed and established as early on in the design process as possible. Changes are costly as we progress into production. To have your customers and end users spell out your Reliability is a costly disaster. And, as we often see, we cannot put a price
The takeaways for this presentation include: Increased awareness of how Quality and Reliability are related. Overview of Reliability Assessment. Life History curve. Understanding the importance of Reliability Risk Assessments when changes are made.
tag on human life. Other aspects of Reliability relate to quality costs, productivity, maintainability, and profitability. Reliability assessments should be performed whenever a change or risk situation is encountered. Joe will cover such topics as Reliability Assessment, Reliability Growth, Preventive tools such as FMEA, FTA, and PM. The link between Quality and Reliability is a two way street. Reliability effects Quality and Quality effects Reliability.
Joe DeSimone, Past Section Chairman and Current Certification Chair of ASQ Los Angeles Section 0700, conducts successful certification courses for ASQ, PMI, and SME exams internationally. Joe holds many certifications and an M.S. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Joe is the Owner of DeSimone Quality International, www.dqi6sigma.com, a word-wide consulting group specializing in Quality and Productivity Improvements. DQI's clients include Honeywell, Northrop Grumman, Edwards Lifesciences, Rand Corporation, Mitsubishi, and many others.
The program will be held at 2nd Floor Main Conference Room at Phenomenex 2341 West 205th Street Torrance, CA 90501. This meeting is an opportunity to network with other Quality Professionals, learn about quality related topics and earn 0.3 Recertification Units. Registration and networking starts at 5:30 PM. The meeting runs from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Crackers, Cookies, Coffee & Water will be provided at no charge.
You MUST RSVP to Chen Low 310-334-7044, pager 310-353-8293 or e-mail [email protected], no-later-than Noon on Monday, February 10th, so he can get the list of attendees to Phenomenex Security.

Message from the Chair - Catherine Martin
At the beginning of January 2014, I took some time to reflect on how fortunate we are at ASQ Los Angeles to have volunteers who are so dedicated to ASQ's Vision of "By making quality a global priority, an organizational imperative, and a personal ethic, ASQ becomes the community for everyone who seeks quality concepts, technology, or tools to improve themselves and their world."
This issue I recognize the Spirit of Volunteerism. You will see our volunteers in action serving on the various committees of our local Section, Regional ASQ and on the national ASQ level. We're proud to have played a significant role in improving our member value by funding general meetings, certification programs, Quality Day and by providing knowledge and information to our Quality Professionals. I encourage you to explore our website to learn about some of the key people that have helped us.
Volunteer opportunities within ASQLA will help you sharpen your existing skills, develop new skills in a risk-free environment, expand your horizons, become more motivated and energized about quality, increase your visibility within the profession, boost self-satisfaction and demonstrate workplace and leadership skills that can be documented on your resume.
The Los Angeles Section has a Leadership Team that sets the direction and objectives for the group. They work on preparing our general meetings and special projects. The volunteer positions and responsibilities are outlined in the national ASQ website. The time commitments for the different positions vary, from a few hours per month to a few hours per week for key leadership roles. Please contribute in any capacity that fits into your life and set of demands.
As Chair, I have the privilege of placing our volunteers on committees. This is something every Chair takes seriously. Help your local section by becoming a volunteer today!
