ASQLA MEMBER MEETING - May 9, 2012
"Risk Management Assurance"
Please join the ASQLA Section 0700 for its monthly member meeting on Wednesday, May 9th. The meeting will be back at Northrup Grummann Conference Room in Redondo Beach. This meeting is an opportunity to network with other Quality professionals and to learn about current techniques & technologies. Our speaker this month is Ms. Jo Ann Shimizu Wood.
The speaker's topic will be "Risk Management Assurance." Risk Management Assurance was established by the Quality, Safety & Mission Assurance (QSMA) organization to ensure effective execution of risk management at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. The objective of Risk Management Assurance is to independently drive the identification and mitigation of risks within and beyond the program area boundaries. One of the early strategies of Risk Management Assurance was to launch and facilitate the Sector Functional Risk and Opportunity Board to recognize, prioritize, and handle risks that could potentially affect sector performance. This board is comprised of executive leadership and has been successful in promulgating insight and awareness of potential risks to the enterprise, while also providing a clear path for the program and business areas to elevate risks for more effective handling by the sector functions. In support of the individual program areas, Risk Management Assurance collaborates with program management to improve risk management policies and procedures, develop guidance for program application, expand risk tool capability and flexibility, and conduct independent assessments to assure process compliance.
Jo Ann Wood is the Sector Lead for Risk Management Assurance and is responsible for executing the QSMA vision for this function. Prior to this position, Jo Ann was the risk manager for several aircraft and space system programs ranging from concept development to production. These programs received the highest customer ratings attainable for her innovative approach to risk management. Jo Ann successfully integrated the risk management process with earned value management, master scheduling, key performance, and health and visibility metrics for an advanced aircraft program resulting in customer accolades and the highest award fee ratings.
Jo Ann's extensive experience within Systems Engineering includes lead positions in Requirements Management, Product Assurance, Project Engineering, and Reliability Engineering. She was also the recipient of eighteen awards for product and process improvements. Jo Ann spent the earlier part of her career in Logistics Support Analysis developing analytical and discrete-event simulation models such as the Integrated Combat Turnaround Model, Sortie Generation Simulation Model, and the Operational & Support Cost Model.
Jo Ann earned her B.S. in Quantitative Methods from California State University Long Beach and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Space Systems Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology. She completed the Project Management certificate program from the California Institute of Technology and has received certificates for Defense and Aerospace Systems Engineering, Six Sigma Champion, Lean Change Agent, and various requirements database and simulation modeling applications.
The program will be located at the E2 Conference Room at Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach. This meeting is an opportunity to network with other Quality Professionals, learn about quality related topics and earn 0.3 Recertification Units. Registration and networking starts at 5:30 PM. The meeting runs from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Crackers, Cookies, Coffee & Water will be provided at no charge. You MUST RSVP to Chen Low 310-334-7044 or pager 310-353-8293 or e-mail address to [email protected], no later than Noon on Monda, May 7th, so a list of attendees for NGC Security. |

Message from the Chair - Lane Parrott
At the April meeting we had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Catherine Martin's presentation on risk based auditing. ISO 9001 and AS 9000, require companies to perform internal audits. As a result they perceive internal audits and Quality Assurance as cost of doing business. Given the current business environment, many companies are reducing staff in non value added departments. QA typically falls into that category. Risk based auditing provides management with the data they need to mitigate risk and implement targeted long term solutions. That creates a paradigm shift. QA become a benefit not a cost, to the company.
If you want to increase your value to your current company, I highly recommend you become a Certified Quality Auditor (CQA). Section 0700 will provide a CQA exam preparation class starting on September 27th. This class will prepare you for the certification exam on December 1, 2012. Please contact Milt Krivokuca [email protected] for details.
During the April meeting a few people expressed interest in becoming the Voice of the Customer Chair. This is great, because we have never been able to cover that position.
The next Leadership Team Meeting is 5:30 PM on Wednesday, May 2 at the Extended Education Building at California State University Dominguez Hills. CSUDH is a large campus, so I suggest entering at Gate D from Victoria Street. Please contact me at 310-489-9018 or [email protected] and I will ensure there is a sandwich waiting for you at he meeting.
I look forward to seeing you at our May 9th meeting!
