The IRS has reported that there have been many recent claims of fake CP2000 notices being sent to taxpayers indicating an amount due related to the Affordable Care Act. A CP2000 notice is normally sent to taxpayers when the income on their tax return does not match what has been reported by the third-party (such as an employer). In many cases, these fraudulent notices are being sent as an attachment to an email message.

If you receive correspondence, watch for any of the following red flags:
  • The notice is sent electronically (the IRS will never initiate contact with taxpayers by email or request a payment by telephone)
  • The notice comes from an Austin, Texas address
  • The underreported issue is related to the Affordable Care Act and requests information related to 2014 coverage
  • The letter number is 105C on the payment voucher provided
  • The notice requests that payment be made electronically or a check written to IRS or Austin Processing Center (An authentic CP2000 notice will always request a check be made out to United States Treasury)
Taxpayers and tax professionals who come across this scam should forward any suspicious emails to phishing@irs.gov and delete the email from their account.
