IRS WARNS OF 'SPOOFING' SCAM TARGETING PAYROLL AND HR DEPARTMENTS
Recently, the IRS issued a warning to payroll and human resource departments of companies regarding a new phishing email scheme in which cybercriminals pose as company executives in order to intercept Forms W-2 that contain social security numbers and other personal information of employees. The new wave of hacks has already impacted several companies, as some offices mistakenly share payroll data through email.
Among the emails messages reported are:
- "Kindly send me the individual 2015 W-2 (PDF) and earnings summary of all W-2 of our company staff for a quick review."
- "Can you send me the updated list of employees with full details (Name, Social Security Number, Date of Birth, Home Address, and Salary)"
- "I want you to send me the list of W-2 copy of employees wage and tax statement for 2015, I need them in PDF file type, you can send it as an attachment. Kindly prepare the lists and email them to me ASAP."
This warning comes as the IRS released a larger-scale consumer alert for email scams after seeing a 400 percent increase in phishing and malware incidents this tax season. These other email schemes are designed to appear that they are coming from the IRS, tax software companies or others in the tax industry. Cybercriminals are constantly coming up with new ways to obtain personal information. It is extremely important to recognize odd email requests, and double check before sharing employees' personal information via email.
