Top_Main_ArticlePAY YOUR INDIVIDUAL TAXES THROUGH IRS 'DIRECT PAY'

IRS Direct Pay online service offers a safe, convenient way to pay your individual tax bill or estimated tax payment directly from your checking or savings account at no additional cost to you. Once a payment is made, Direct Pay does not retain your bank account information. Taxpayers can schedule a payment up to 30 business days in advance. Currently, there is not an option to set up recurring payments.

Taxpayers can access IRS Direct Pay from the "Pay Your Tax Bill" icon at the top of IRS home page and follow these five easy steps:
  1. Provide your tax information
  2. Verify your identity
  3. Enter your payment information
  4. Review and electronically sign the transaction
  5. Print or record your confirmation number

Prior year returns. The system allows for payments towards a 1040 tax return for the last 20 years. Estimated tax payments and requests for extension of time to file can be made for the current tax year only.

Verifying identity. A taxpayer's identity is verified by using one of the taxpayer's prior year processed tax returns. The taxpayer can choose one of the last five years for identity verification. This verifying step must be done each time the taxpayer uses the system to make a payment.

Payment processing. Once a confirmation number is received, the payment takes two business days to process. Taxpayers can check the status, edit or cancel their payment by clicking on the "Payment Look Up" link from the main page of Direct Pay.

For more information on Direct Pay go to irs.gov or contact your professional at UHY LLP in Farmington Hills 248 355 1040 or Sterling Heights 586 254 1040.
