PLEAS FOR A HIGHER MINIMUM WAGE

On April 2, President Obama delivered a speech at the University of Michigan in favor of a gradual increase in the state minimum wage to $10.10 by 2017. The President urged state legislators not to wait for Congress to adopt a hike in the federal minimum wage. In response to the President's ongoing pleas, Connecticut and Maryland lawmakers have passed legislation that will gradually increase each state's minimum wage to $10.10. President Obama said that he hopes Congress, governors and state legislators will follow Connecticut and Maryland's lead to "ensure that no American who works full time has to raise a family in poverty, and that every American who works hard has the opportunity to succeed."

Michigan is set to have a ballot proposal in November for an increased minimum wage in line with President Obama's campaigning from $7.40 to $10.10 per hour.

Since the beginning of the year, other states that have approved minimum wage increases of different amounts are Delaware ($8.25), Minnesota ($9.50), West Virginia ($8.75) and The District of Columbia ($11.50). California and New York have increases going into effect later this year. Several other states consider minimum wage adjustments based on inflation as determined by the consumer price index.
