When Sonya* and her children came to My Sisters' Place, our domestic violence shelter, she had been in an financially, emotionally and psychologically abusive relationship for more than 12 years.
Married young, Sonya's husband had always been a little controlling, but soon after the birth of their first child, things took a more drastic turn. Her husband became more controlling, withholding money and not allowing her to make even basic purchases for the family or her children. Sonya couldn't work because her husband constantly accused of her cheating on him with her coworkers. Sonya felt trapped.
With the help of friends, Sonya eventually came to My Sisters' Place. Finally free of her husband's control and determined to make a better life for her children, Sonya got a job. She and her children received counseling and began to heal. With the help of our transitional services, Sonya was eventually able to find a home for herself and children.
Last year, Sonya returned to My Sisters' Place to show her appreciation by providing a special holiday* meal for everyone. Sonya continues to thrive. She was promoted to a management position at work and continues to live a happy and abuse-free life with her children.
