Plan Views
from The Cecil Group
|
Highlights This month we're spotlighting our work for Dedham, Massachusetts where we were charged with developing a user-friendly permitting guide. It was a unique project for the firm in that it allowed us to take a very customized graphic design approach in creating a series of custom icons to better communicate what can be a hard-to-understand process.
Our next installment in our video series is on placemaking. Learn more about our philosophy as explained by the firm's Director of Landscape Architecture, Erik Bednarek.
Cecil Group Principal, Steve Cecil is back from speaking at the National APA conference and is heading to West Warwick, RI on Saturday to conduct a walking tour along with Emily Innes, an assistant planner with the firm. You can also catch Steve at Harvard GSD this summer where he'll lead a class on urban agriculture.
We have a couple of job postings, both intern and professional level. Lastly, we're sharing our mentoring experience through ACE Mentoring Program. |

Project Spotlight: Business Permitting Guide for Dedham, Massachusetts
Some projects allow us to flex our graphic design muscles more than others and the business permitting guide the firm created for the Town of Dedham was one such project. The Cecil Group helped the Town create a user friendly guide to educate potential business owners on the Town's permitting process as well as make the process more approachable and easier to understand. We crafted clear, concise text and developed graphics to serve as visual representations of the various tasks a potential business owner would need to complete in order to locate their business in Dedham. The guide was formatted to be modular, making updates easier and more cost effective. The guide has received high praise from both the Town and those using the guide to navigate the permitting process. Click to view some interior pages.

Mentoring Tomorrow's Landscape Architects Cecil Group's Director of Landscape Architecture, Erik Bednarek (pictured 3rd from the left) has spent the past two years mentoring tomorrow's landscape architects through the ACE Mentoring Program. With a mission to engage, excite and enlighten high school students to pursue careers within the architecture, construction and engineering fields, this highly recognized program received the Presidential Award from President Barack Obama in 2010 for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. Erik spends 2-4 hours per week meeting with high school students and other professional mentors to help guide them through a full design process for a real project. Through 11 weeks of mentoring, the students are able to witness the entire design process and all of the complexities that come along with it including collaborating with other students who are teamed within other disciplines such as architecture, civil and mechanical engineering. "It is really special to have the opportunity to witness high school students become passionate about a profession and become fully engaged in a detailed process while learning a real outcome," says Erik. "I was never this engaged in a profession when I was in high school and it's truly astonishing to see these young adults commit to traveling across the city after school via multiple MBTA stops to be challenged at something new. It's absolutely exciting and motivating for me as well."
