Plan Views
from The Cecil Group
Highlights
In this issue of Plan Views we discuss how the simple re-tweaking of an existing charrette tool resulted in higher engagement in Claremont, NH.

The second video in our series is ready for viewing. In this segment you'll meet Josh Fiala who speaks about form-based codes and mixed-use development.

Steve Cecil will be in Chicago this spring to participate on a panel at the National APA conference. He'll be speaking about design standards and zoning to encourage compact development.

In the continuation of our Meet the Staff series, we'll introduce you to landscape designer and urban designer, Joseph Strayer.
It's All a Game
Claremont Charrette Game

The Cecil Group has been working with the City of Claremont, New Hampshire to draft new hybrid form-based zoning to implement the City's vision to enhance mixed-use characteristics, enhance walkability and livability and attract new investment. As part of the process, The Cecil Group led a community-wide charrette to engage residents and business owners in developing the design standards for future development within their community. To make the process fun for participants we redesigned our popular "game-board" charrette tool into a graphically engaging game box, which when opened contained cards that participants could use to build their ideal neighborhood. The box contained a mix of cards with different building types as well as educational cards that explained such technical terms as improved dimensional standards, overlay districts, and form-based code. The backs of the educational cards were designed for participants to provide feedback on what they saw as problems or solutions that these tools would create within the context of their neighborhood. Both fun and informative, the game allowed participants to provide valuable input into the process and helped us make form-based codes more understandable and approachable for attendees.

Meet Joe Strayer
Joe Strayer
Joe joined The Cecil Group this past summer after earning his Masters in Urban Design from Arizona State University. With a bachelors degree in landscape architecture, Joe brings an inter-disciplinary focus to all of the projects he works on. This is evidenced by the range of assignments he's currently contributing to including a streetscape project in Framingham, MA, a TOD project in Windsor, CT and a military base planning project in Cape Cod, MA. Learn more about Joe.

What type of tree best describes you? Sycamores; they have large showy leaves and vibrant exfoliating bark to exhibit prominence in a streetscape.

Thing you're most proud of? Running my own residential landscape business; It was challenging.

What is one thing that you would literally run away from? Spiders. It's true. They have 8 eyes, it's disgusting!

Worst job you've ever had? I was a vendor for Epson printers at Best Buy. Black Friday was the worst day to sell printers.

We hope you enjoyed this issue of Plan Views. Our aim is to provide you with useful information and update you on firm news. Is there other information you'd like to hear from us? Reply to this email and send us your feedback.
